1.1 Who the Guide is for
This guide is for undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student at College of Engineering here at Penn State University. The guide is made specify for engineering student at least in his/her second year at Penn State. Undergraduate students will be able to use the guide to help his/her with research project and capstone project. Also this guide provides information that will help students with homework. Although this guide is design for undergraduate students, graduate students and professional personal may use this guide with help them with their research.

1.2 What is in the Guide


This guide contains online resource information that is going to help undergraduate mechanical engineering students here at Penn State University. This guide is divided into five different categories. Each category have subtitle within it. In addition, each subtitle contents a short description about the title. It also provides the website where the information can be found and tip about navigating the website successfully. This guide provides necessary information for engineering student to be successful his/her class work.

1.3 What the Guide assumes about user


The author of the guide assumes that the reader has an access to computer with internet. In addition, readers know how to navigate different browser tab on a particular website. Also the reader had at least finished his/her freshmen year. Since most of the tips that will be provided in this guide, students have done them either in English 15 or Introduction to Engineering Design class. Furthermore, most of the information is relevant to undergraduate students with sophomore statues.

1.4 How the Guide is organized


This guide is organized base on information most important to the readers. Therefore internet site has been place first since most of Mechanical Engineering students need assistant and data to do his/her homework. Students will find internet site are very useful for their classes. Each new subtitle has been place in a new page so that it is going be easy for reader to find the information. Afterword, journal, index, Statistic Abstract, and Government publication has been place one after another respectively. Engineering students will be using this information when he/she is doing a research project or capstone project in his/her senior year.

1.5 Tips for using the Guide


This guide is organized a way that is most helpful to a fellow Mechanical Engineering students. Here are few tips about using this guide efficiently and effectively. 1. In order to use this guide efficiently and effectively, reader most have a good understanding of the Table of Content. 2. Reader must use table of content to find the information that he/she is looking for with in this guide. 3. Reader must read the tips within each resource material to understand way of maximizing the usefulness of that material

Description: This is a great website to get quick information regarding all the subjects that cover in engineering program. Students will be able to find quick and brief information about the subject they are inquiring about. Using of this website is every easy and simple. After entering into the website, student see different subject matter with it brief description on the homepage or left hand side of the website. Few broad subjects have sub-subject within it. If the student is unable to find the subject he/she is looking for then he/she can use the search tab on to find the information. In addition, this website is great for providing conversion between units such as from Metric to English and vice verse. Since as engineering student, most of the time converting units is very important. This website is very helpful when students taking Thermodynamic (ME 300) class.

Tips: After entering the website, readers have many options to obtain information that the reader is looking within this particular website. 1. Use the search engine if you know exactly what you are looking for. 2. If unsure about specific subject, choose a broad category that relate to the subject then choose chose a subject within it. 3. For fastest was of finding information about this website is to do a Google search with the website name include in the search.

Student can use this website to obtain information that will help them to solve problem. The home page is categorized in different topics. Students can select a topic which opens a different page. Then that page contains more subtopic that a student can select from. Student can use that information in his/her design class such as Product Design and Manufacturing Processes class, Properties and Processing of Engineering Materials class, and any other class involve design. Since material information and drawing is a major part of mechanical engineering program. This website provides information that will benefit mechanical engineering students tremendous in his/her class.

Tips: 1. Choose from one of the six broad topics, which will take you to a narrow subtopic that you will be able to choose from for the information that you are looking for. 2. Use the search engine for faster result if you know what you are looking for

Students will be able to use this website to find out about what classes they need to take and when in order to graduate on time. In addition, students will be able to use this website to find more about his/her professor background and interest of research area. Furthermore, students will be able to find out career resource and scholarships that are very specific only to Mechanical Engineering students. Tips: 1. Using the undergraduate tab reader will find all the information he/she need from curriculum to jobs to scholarship information. 2. Using the directory tab reader will be able to find information about all the professor in the department

1.4 American Society of Mechanical Engineers


Website Location and Availability Web Page: https://www.asme.org/ Description: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a not for profit engineering society for mechanical engineering students. ASME is a globally recognized organization. ASME plays an important role in set standard for every aspect of manufacturing product. ASME work very closely with government to set standard. In addition, it also provides most current research information in different industries, which will help Mechanical Engineering students. Also undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students can join ASME. ASME holds conference and event for different topics where students have opportunity to learn more about his/her passion and networking with others with same passion. In fact Penn State is part of ASME since it has an AMSE chapter that affiliated with global AMSE.

Tips: 1. Use the four tabs on home page to find what you are looking for 2. If looking for job it is under the Networking tabs 3. Topic tab bring different subject matter that reader can choose from to read about

In addition, it also provides free eBook about different subject matter that students can use for research. This is a great website to get to know since it provides free peer review journal. Students can not only use material from the journal his/her current class but also in his/her future career. Tips: 1. Choose a year folder that you are looking information for, which will then bring up all the publish document from that year if you are looking for a particular year 2. Use the Journal A-Z tab to find all the open journal where you will be able to find the journal you are looking for and the information that you need 3. You may also use the Journal by Subject matter to find all the journal belongs to a material subject matter.

Students that are doing research in mechanical engineering department can take great advantage of this journal database search engine. This database added new material regarding engineering material every week. This is a great place to obtain information since most of the material has to pass to peer-review. There is many ways a student can search information at this database such as by: Subject/Title, Abstract, Author, Author Affiliation, ISBN, and etc. Student can enter more information in different search bar, which will narrow down the search result.

Tips: 1. Use specific and multiple words in different search tab to narrow the search result. 2. Use a word with question mark at end to find more result 3. Search by author or article title if known, to find information faster

Survey data provide very importance information. For example an undecided Mechanical Engineering student about his/her career can use the website to find out about different industries. Student will also be able to use the data figure out what business sector they would like to focus on while in school. Students will also going to be able to use to data co predict what field is growing and he/she should take class on. Tip: 1. Upon entering the website, select a broad topic such as people or business. 2. After you will find the all the data information under those to topic and you will be able to find what you are looking for. For example, you can select manufacturing to find out everything about manufacturing going on in USA.

Catalog Location and Availability Web page: http://purl.fdlp.gov/GPO/gpo41328 Description: The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications contain valuable online and print publication information from legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the U.S. government since 1976 and will contain more data from 1800s. The information provided by the website can also be found at a local library such as Penn State University Library. The website contain research article that was funded by the government. It also contains all the Bills that have been passed by all three branches of U.S. government. Students will be able to use this website to find out information when he/she is doing a capstone project in senior year. In addition students will be able to find Bills pass by government to see how student design might be affect by a bill. There is three ways students can find information such as using Basic, Advance, or Expert search tool. Tips: 1. Each search tool provides tips about bottom of the page about how to use the search tool effectively. 2. Using advance search use question mark at end of the word and use multiple words in different search tab to find information faster. 3. Using expert search tool, reader must know few common abbreviation word such as: WRD for word, WRD Words, WTI for Words in title field, WAU for Words in author field, WPU - Words in publisher field, and many more
