Pan All About Me Lesson Plan Co-op Teacher- Mrs. Canals 1. Lesson Topic & Grade Level: All About Me (favorites); 1st grade 2. Lesson Essential Question(s): - Will the students know who I am? - Will the students know what I am interested in/my favorites? - Will the students know what I care about/what I stand for? - Will students be able to create their own comprehensive book of favorites? 3. Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. 4. Learning Objects and Assessments: Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify 5 facts about the teacher. Students will be able to define the following words: sushi, carnation, Bengal (cat), gymnastics. Students will be able to identify their favorite food, color, animal, sport, and movie. 5. Materials: - All About Me book - All About Me template - Markers/Crayons - Pens/Pencils - Yarn 6. Prior Knowledge: - Students know how to listen and respond appropriately to directions. - Students know how to recall information and definitions. - Students know how to respond appropriately to questions. - Students know how to ask questions for clarification and explanation. 7. Lesson Beginning:

Assessments: Teacher will ask the students to recall her favorites after the book has been read to them. Teacher will go over the definitions at the beginning of the lesson and then have the students define them back to her as she reads the book and at the end of the book. Teacher will walk around and observe students as they create their own book of favorites.

All students will be seated at their desks. The teacher will ask students, table by table, to have a seat on the rug. The teacher will begin by refreshing the students memory of last weeks reading of a different All About Me book. Teacher will then go over each of the vocabulary words at the back of her All About Me Book of Favorites. The students will be asked to repeat the vocabulary words back to her. Once the teacher feels that all the students understand the vocabulary words, she will then beginning reading her book to the students. The students are asked to pay close attention to the written words and pictures on each page as a model for the following activity. 8. Instructional Plan: Lesson beginning (All students are seated on the rug) Start lesson o In the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will ask the class a question: Can anyone explain to the class what the word favorite means? Answer: a person or thing that is especially popular or particularly well liked by someone; preferred before all others of the same kind. This will take approximately 1 minute. o The teacher will begin the lesson by introducing four vocabulary words: sushi, carnation (flower), Bengal (cat), and gymnastics. Sushi: Japanese food; cooked rice with different raw fish and/or vegetables Carnation (pink): flower that symbolizes Mothers Day; every color means something- pink means Mothers love Bengal (cat): type of cat; a mix between a domestic/house cat and an Asian leopard cat Gymnastics: physical sport; involves the uneven bars, balance beam, floor, and vaulting horse (for women), and parallel bars, rings, floor, and pommel horse (for men) The students will repeat the word back to the teacher for word fluency. This will take approximately 3 minutes. o The teacher will read through her Book of Favorites to the class. As the teacher is reading through her book, she will ask the students recall questions relating back to the new vocabulary words. An example question would be, Can anyone tell me what kind of food is sushi? Answer: Japanese food The questions throughout the reading will help assess the students understanding of the new vocabulary words. This will take approximately 10 minutes. o The teacher will go through the vocabulary words once more, and run through the book asking questions to check for comprehension and listening skills. An example question would be, Does anyone remember what my favorite sport is? Answer: Gymnastics

This will take approximately 2 minutes. o The teacher will explain the directions on how to create their own Book of Favorites. Teacher will provide examples of different popular favorites for each topic (food, color, animal, sport, and movie) Students are given a minute for any questions on the activity. Students will line up in front of the teacher to receive their Book of Favorites template. Students will then walk back to their assigned seats and begin writing and coloring their book. This will take approximately 3 minutes. o The teacher will walk around the classroom checking for comprehension understanding and for any questions the students may have as they complete their book. This will take approximately 20 minutes. Differentiation: o Students who understand the concept and complete their book early will be encouraged to help their classmates in completing their book. o For kinesthetic learners, writing in their favorites books and providing a visual image of their favorites will help strengthen their understanding. o For visual learners, the classes book of favorites will be displayed on the bulletin board inside the classroom to help strengthen their understanding. Questions: o What does the word favorite mean? o Does everyone have the same or different favorites? o How is your favorite (e.g. food, color, animal, sport, and movie) different or similar than mine? Classroom Management: o Students will be grouped together on the rug at the beginning and end of the lesson. o Students will work on their book individually at their own desk. o The teacher will distribute the Book of Favorites template to the students in an orderly line after she goes over the directions. o If any student misbehaves while we are on the rug, he/she will be asked to return back to their seat until they are able to act properly on the rug with the rest of his/her classmates. o If any student misbehaves while completing their book, they will be asked to take a time-out from their work and put their head down on their desk for a few minutes to help bring them back to classroom order. Transitions: o For the lesson beginning, all students will be seated at their desk. o The students will go table-by-table onto the rug.

o If the students have a question/comment for the teacher, they are to raise their hand. o All students must be sitting on their bottoms, or they will not be called on to share their question/comment. o The students will line up in an orderly fashion in front of the teacher to receive their Book of Favorites template. o Students will sit back at their assigned desk and begin filling out their template. o After the majority of students have completed their book, all students will be asked to walk back to the rug to share their books to each other. o After the class discussion, students will form a line in front of the teacher and pass forward their books, and return back to their desks. o The teacher will display the students work onto the class bulletin board at a later time so that it does not distract the students. 9. Closure: The teacher will announce a five minute heads-up and then a one-minute heads-up for completing their book. The students will then be asked to clean up their desks and put all pencils and crayons away. Once each table is cleared off, they will be asked to have a seat back on the rug. The teacher will choose three students who are behaving and siting properly to come up to the front of the class and share their book to their classmates. Afterwards, all the students will be asked to turn to the person next to them and pair-and-share their books with each other. This will allow all students to be involved and engaged with the activity, and for the teacher to observe and listen for comprehension understanding. After the lesson, the teacher will display the students work on the bulletin board as a visual aid for any future reference.
