Mitchell Carnahan 3/16/2014 Management Plan EDUC450 Part 1: In my future classroom I want to have a lot of different aspects added

to it. The first thing I want my classroom to be is safe. I want students to feel safe coming to class, and safe sharing their thoughts and opinions about what were will be discussing. That is the one thing I was always scared of in school. I never wanted to share my ideas or questions in fear of being wrong or sounding dumb. But in my classroom I want it to be a place where no question or idea is stupid. Physically I want my classroom to be a place with windows. I cant stand having no natural light in a room. I always loved having a room with at least a few windows to let the light in and also for fresh air in the spring and fall times. I am also a firm believer in having lamps in the classroom to use when acceptable. I have liked having lamps in classrooms for reading time or giving lectures. I dont want to be the teacher that has a bunch of lame Read posters all over his room. I love reading but I want my classroom to reflect a little bit of my personal taste in what got me interested in English. I always liked walking into a classroom that had some color in it and some cool posters. The actual physical space of my future classroom is something I have thought a lot about. I know one thing for sure and that is that I want my classroom to be student-oriented. This means that the desks are just sitting in straight rows and facing the board. If possible I want my classroom to be rounded. I prefer to discuss novels we read and I have found that by putting the seats in a circular design it really opens up the floor to student discussion. I do think it is a good idea to have the teachers desk at the front of the room somewhere. I hope to have a book case or two for students to pick readings out of. Also I want to have a reading zone where students can sit and do reading or homework or even group assignments as well. Overall I want it to be a very open classroom. I dont plan on just lecturing the whole time, so I want students to be able to generate questions and ideas to share with the class. The way I will manage resources will be a little different in my classroom. I like the idea of all digital assignments for a few different reasons. First off it saves paper that you the teacher would have to collect and grad and then hand back out. If students did this online and dropped it in a drop box, I the teacher could grade on my computer, add notes and comments, and then send it back with all the feedback they need and a grade. No paper used, and no paper wasted. Of course there will be some times where I will have students do assignments that will need to be handed in physically. Worksheets and other assignments that arent major papers are things I would want turned in to myself physically. Yes this makes a paper load for me to grade and get back to students but it isnt nearly as much as reading each essay over and over. As far as managing time I want to have a daily schedule up for what we as a class will be doing. It will be a little section of the white board that has our end goal of the day

and also a schedule of what we will do through the class period. I saw my cooperating teacher do this in my Education 350 class and it worked great, so I decided I want to do that in my classroom as well. It really did help manage time with the class. Time was never wasted or misused. The only routines I can think of would be sort of like class norms. Students need to be respectable to others as well as respectable to the teachers. If you (a fellow student) see a student struggling dont be afraid to ask them if they need help. It doesnt make you a bigger person for knowing something that someone else doesnt. It means you have the opportunity to help that student get on the same level as everyone else. I do however want there to be a routine for reading and writing each day. Whether it is ten minutes of free writing or a specific prompt given I think it is beneficial to have that first ten minutes of class to get some thoughts out on paper or at least write about something. In the end I want my classroom to feel open and welcoming to new and old students. I want it to be a place where students feel safe to be vulnerable and learn new things.

Rules and Expectations: As upcoming adults it is important that you understand how to act in my classroom. There is one main rule in my classroom and that is as follows: You may do anything that does not inhibit the learning of anyone around you or yourself. It is a pretty simple rule to follow. I leave this up to you to decide what correct behavior is and what is not. If you cannot follow this rule I will have to take action a few different ways. I can meet with your personally and we can decide what to do about your negative actions, we can call your parents and let them know how you are acting in class, or the final action is having you sit down with the principal to let him/her know about your behavior in my classroom. I expect you to be responsible for you own actions and to own up to your mistakes. You are on your way to becoming adults and you need to learn how to behave like one. Overall I expect that you give my class a full effort and to challenge yourself every day in the classroom, even if it is not mine. Grading: To receive the following grades you will need to have the corresponding percentage next to it. I do not round up even if it is half a percent away. 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F Homework: All assignments are due on the date listed in the syllabus unless changed by me the teacher. If you have an excused absence I will take the time to get you a personal packet with what you missed for the day and any homework assigned for the day. Any homework that was given on the day of the excused absence is due the next class period. I do accept late work but for each day it is late it drops a whole letter grade, so please get them in on time!

Tests/Quizzes: All test/quiz dates are in the syllabus. You must be here on the day of the test or quiz in order to take it. If you are absent with no excuse, you cannot make up the test/quiz. If you have an excused absence we can discuss a time that would work for you to make up the test in the following days. I will not allow students to make up or retake a test after a week has gone past the original date. I will allow only ONE retake of a test over the semester, and you can only retake it if you received a failing grade. Absences: If you are absent with no excuse you will not receive a packet from me including the homework assignment that was given that day. Also if you are absent the day an assignment is due, you may not turn that assignment in late. I will not accept it. If you have an excused absence I will gladly take your homework the next class period. The only way to make up work is to have an excused absence. I will not allow any make up work to be turned in by students who have been missing with no excused absences. Tardies: You are given 3 tardies over the semester. After the first three your grade will drop by half a letter grade. It is important you get to class on time each day, as it is respectful to me your teacher and your classmates as well. Your participation in class is much needed and wanted! So please, be on time! Participation: I expect you to come to class ready to actively participate in some part of the class. I know some days you are going to be out of it or just dont feel like participating, but it is crucial that you at least make an effort to participate at least once a day in class. Whether it is one sentence you contribute or one question I dont care, as long as you contribute and participate with the class. I do not grade on your participation but I do want you all to actively engage yourself in class to help each other learn and grow together. If I feel you arent putting forth an effort in class I will ask you to stay after and have a talk with me about why you arent participating.
