Is Obesity a Disease? BU Today. Boston University., 20 Jun. 2013.Web. 20 Mar. 2014.

The arguments involved in this article are those of doctors with different outlooks on the classification of obesity as a disease. There are several different arguments made in this article, but the two most important are by Daniel Miller and Alan Sager. Daniel Miller, a doctor who was a part of this article, argues that identifying obesity as a disease will prompt people to further identify obesity as a purely medical problem, and one that is best treated by pharmaceuticals or surgery, which doesnt acknowledge the root cause of obesity, which are the social and environmental influences. In another aspect of obesity, Alan Sager argues that obesity is only a risk factor for diseases like diabetes or heart ailments, rather than a disease itself. This article is written, not to protest the AMAs decision to make obesity a disease, but to give some facts about obesity and acknowledge the societal effects that this decision makes. This source is very useful because it is an article of several doctors just giving facts and telling interested citizens about the effect of the decision to make obesity a disease. This article is not like the rest of my sources, it does not have a direct point that says the AMA is wrong for declaring obesity a disease, it just gives several doctors opinions supported by facts. I believe that the information is very reliable because it is from a University research program and the information is from certified doctors, who have experienced this issue first hand. This source is bias only because the doctors are stating their opinions, even though they are providing facts to support them. The goal of this source is to inform concerned citizens of the effects of obesity being a disease and also to give information about what obesity actually is.

Denton 2 This article was a very helpful source in my research because it actually gave facts about what obesity is. It didnt say that the AMA was right or wrong, it just gave the opinions of several doctors. It was very helpful in the path of my research that included the societal effects of obesity being named a disease because the doctors who experienced his first hand are the ones who are speaking in this article. This article could be used in my research project as example of the different opinions of doctors and the different societal effects obesity have. The article did not change my mind on my topic, it actually gave me more information and examples. I originally disagreed with the AMA s decision to call obesity a disease and this article was a great source to give me more of a reason to disagree.

DNews. Should Obesity Be A Disease? Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 21 Jun. 2013. Web. 19 Mar. 2014.

The main arguments in this video clip by Discovery News are the actual classification of being obese or the body mass index (BMI) and the reasons for obesity being a disease and also for not being a disease. The argument pertaining to the BMI scale argues that the BMI scale regularly classifies healthy people as being overweight and unhealthy people with high levels of fat and insulin resistance as being at a healthy weight, which leads to inflated obesity statistics. The argument that says obesity is a disease says that there are already pharmaceuticals in the making to treat obesity. They also state the opinion that calling obesity a disease will make the non-obese people more compassionate to the ones who have this disease. Also it is argued that calling obesity a disease will change the way doctors look at these patients. It will make them take more attention to these cases. The argument that obesity is not a disease has very little voice in this video clip. The only thing stated about this argument is that obesity is not a disease, only a risk factor for other diseases. The point made in this article is first the show the many different voices that are involved in this issue and secondly, to identify the effects and arguments. This video clip was a very opinionated, but informational source. It gave the different effects and the impacts they had on the different voices. This video clip is the most opinion-based source I have came across in my research because it explores the questions that the viewers of Discovery News have on this issue. This information may not seem reliable because it is so opinion-based, but along with the opinions, there are supporting facts and images of different informative articles within the video. There is bias in this video clip too, again because of the opinions.

Denton 3 The goal of this video clip is to expand on the viewers question on the issue, and also to inform and maybe change some minds on the issue. This source not as helpful to me because it stated information that I was already aware of, but if someone was not aware of this it was probably very helpful. This shapes my argument because it defends both sides along with some information about what classifies someone as being obese. This source could also be used in my research project solely because it identifies the different voices. It has not changed my outlook on my topic mainly because it was not my first time hearing most of this information.

Pollack, Andrew. A.M.A. Recognizes Obesity as a Disease. The New York Times. New York Times Company., 19 Jun. 2013. Web. 20 Mar. 2014

The arguments surfaced in this article from The New York Times are for the most part taking the pro side to obesity being a disease. The article brings up the positive effects of obesity being called a disease by the AMA. Morgan Downey says I think you will probably see from this physicians taking obesity more seriously, counseling their patients about it. This article also brings up a point that has not yet been surfaced in my research, which is the issue of pharmaceuticals to treat obesity. The article quotes Two new obesity drugs Qsymia from Vivus, and Belviq from Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai have entered the market in the last year. According to Pollack, Qsymia has not sold well due to various and serious side effects including birth defects. The point of this article is not like the others, this source only argues the positive side of obesity being a disease, rather than both sides of the argument. This article was useful in some aspects, but not in others. It is helpful in finding mainly positive effects of obesity being called a disease, but not helpful if I were looking for negative effects. This article by The New York Times differs from my other sources because, like I have already stated, it only addresses one side of the issue, It only gives the positive effects, not the negative. This information is somewhat reliable, but not as reliable as my other sources. It is from an online newspaper, and sometimes words can get moved around or tampered with by reporters. Of course, this source is very bias because it only identifies the positive effects of obesity being called a disease. It doesnt even acknowledge the negative effects. The goal of this source is to persuade its viewers that there are only good effects that come from obesity being named a disease.

Denton 4 This source was a very good aid in my research for the aspects of the positive effects. It gave great reasons why obesity should in fact stay classified as a disease. It shapes my argument well having strong evidence of the positive effects of obesity being a disease. This source could be used in my research project if I were to present the positive and negative effects of obesity being named a disease by the American Medical Association(AMA) . It actually changed my outlook on my topic because originally I completely disagreed with the classification of obesity as a disease, but this article poses great arguments of why obesity being a disease is a good thing. It would actually affect the way physicians and the world look at obesity.

WEWS NewsChannel5. Obesity a Chronic Disease? Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 19 Jun. 2013. Web. 19 Mar. 2014.

This video clip on Youtube is a news broadcast from Channel 5 News. The arguments in this source are the voices of the citizens that have submitted the questions. The issue of Healthcare costing more for people who are obese is also an argument. The few arguments in this source a mildly supported, but are more quotes that pose very good arguments in themselves. The first quote is by ISIS and says Obesity is a condition, not a disease. But it can lead to other diseases. This is not the first time I have heard this quote, but it still does pose a good argument. The other argument is a quote by CONNIE and she proves a great point when she states If alcoholism is a disease, why not obesity? This quote alone could change some ones entire perspective on obesity being a disease. The point of the video clip is to give the news of the effects of obesity and to show some of the concerned citizens opinions. The article is mainly about the voice of the viewers because it yields their questions and actually shows their input on this controversial issue. This source was useful in determining the voices that are related to obesity, but as far as facts go, there were not many involved in this article. It would also be helpful in finding out the views and knowledge of the citizens that are providing their input. This video is unlike my other sources because it is a new broadcast and it never actually gives actual answers to the questions being asked. It only gives the opinions of a handful of people. The information is reliable to the people it is coming from, but in the sense of facts, there are not man y reliable facts proved in this video clip. This source was indeed bias because of its opinioned format. The ultimate goal of the source was to inform the viewers of the voices involved and also the possible raise in the cost of healthcare due to the classification of obesity as a disease.

Denton 5 This source was not very helpful to men because it did not pose many facts, which are what is needed to have a strong research project. In the aspect of voices, this was a very helpful article because it showed that the citizens really are concerned and have very persuasive arguments. This helps shape my argument by showing the different arguments that the different voices have, so I can build off of that and eventually know the overall point of each voice involved in the debate on obesity. These quotes that I stated earlier that were in this video clip did actually make me think back about why obesity should be declared a disease and give it another look. My mind changes, little by little as I evaluate these sources.

HBODocs. Healthcare Costs Greatly Impacted by Obesity. Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 14 May 2012. Web. 18 Mar. 2014.

The main argument in this video clip is the impact that the classification of obesity as disease has on Healthcare costs. Classification of obesity as a disease cause Healthcare costs to go up a tremendous amount. This Youtube video gives good statistics that prove their argument. The statistics that prove this right are; on average, an obese person costs about $1,400 more to care for than someone who is not obese. Also stated by HBO Documentaries, collectively, obesity costs about $150 billion per year. The point of this article is to present that the costs of obesity are rising and are continuing to rise due to the classification of obesity as a disease. I would say this article is about the very controversial issue of whether or not obesity should be a disease, and the effect that it actually being classified a disease ahs on Healthcare. This source is very useful because it answers one of the questions that my line of inquiry has surfaced. It also shows that the insurance companies have a voice in the midst of this issue. This video clip compared to my other sources is much more informative. It involves statistics that coincide directly with the issue at hand. This information is very reliable because it is coming from men and women who are very important voices in this issue. The voices are the insurance companies as well as doctors who have the issue presented to them first hand everyday. The source is objective. It is not trying to persuade anyone to disagree with the classification, it is only stating cold hard facts that are happening as a direct result of the classification of obesity as a disease. The goal of this source is to inform Americans of the effects that obesity have on Healthcare. This source was very helpful to my research because I researched the effects that the classification had on society and the aspect of Healthcare is a very big part of

Denton 6 those effects. This helps shape the argument that obesity should not be considered a disease because the high costs that will happen to Healthcare as a result of this. This can be used in my research project, as I said before, as one of the effects that this classification has on the United States of America. This article did not change my mind, it actually made my argument that obesity should not be a disease a whole lot stronger. It gives me good facts, statistics and examples of the negative effect this has on our Healthcare. Therefore, classifying obesity as a disease will, in the long run, cost the United States more money.

Kopelman, P G; Finer. Reply: Is Obesity a Disease? N. International Journal of Obesity & Related Metabolic Disorders. Oct. 2001, Vol. 25 Issue 10, p1405. 2p. Web. 18 Mar. 2014

In the article Reply: Is obesity a disease by PG Kopelman and N Finer, which is a reply to the article from Drs. Heshka and Allisons article, the authors start out by saying We are grateful for the opportunity to respond to Drs. Heshka and Allisons paper suggesting that they mean no disrespect to the other authors even though they disagree with their viewpoint. Kopelman argues the view that obesity should be a disease. They actually give the definition of the disease, which is A condition of the body, its parts, organs or systems, or and alteration. Therefore obesity satisfies this definition. It poses a great argument because they give the actual definition of a disease. The point of this article is to persuade readers that obesity should, in fact, be classified a disease. The article is about the positives of obesity being classified a disease and poses great arguments about why it should. This source is also useful to me because it gives me the other side of the argument, which indeed aids my research because I have a good argument. A good argument knows both sides of the issue. This makes my argument much stronger. This is very similar to the article by Dr. S. Heshka because it is a reply to it. The information is also reliable because it is information given by doctors that deal with the issue first hand. This source is bias because it is trying to convince the reader to agree with the author. The goal of this article is to give reasons why obesity should be a disease and attempts to persuade the reader to agree. This source is helpful in the aspect of gaining information on both sides of the argument. It shapes my research because it gives perspectives of both sides so that the readers can evaluate both sides and choose which side they agree with more.

Denton 7 This source is useful in my research because it also shows that doctors have a voice in this argument. They have one of the most important voices because they deal with the issue everyday. This did pose good information, but did not change my mind on the topic. The other side of the argument made more since to me.

S Heshka. Is Obesity a Disease? New York Obesity Research Center. Oct. 2001. Web. 18 Mar. 2014

In the article by S Heshka and DB Allsion, they support the argument that obesity is not a disease. The main argument in this article is the fact that all other arguments on obesity have stated obesity as a disease, but have never given enough elaboration on what a disease really is or why obesity is one. The point of this article is to give facts and examples of why obesity should not be considered a disease. I would say this article is about the flaws of the classification of obesity as a disease. It states that obesity leads to diseases, but isnt a disease. This source is very useful because it is an article written by a couple of doctors that have a different opinion, and supporting facts about obesity. This article is much like all of my other sources because it is written by doctors and it is opinioned. It is also very similar to the article I have by Dr. Kopelman because the article by Dr. Kopelman is a reply to this article. This information is reliable, again, because it is coming from doctors who study this issue first hand in their everyday lives. The information is bias because the doctors have a standpoint that he is trying to convince the reader to believe. The ultimate goal of this source is to persuade the reader that obesity should not be classified a disease. This source was helpful to me because it was one of the first articles that I came across and it was the main source that helped me establish my view on this issue. It shapes my argument by giving supporting facts and examples. This source is used in my research project in the aspect of voices. It establishes the voice that obesity should not be classified a disease, which is a very big part of my research. This article shaped my entire outlook on this topic, therefore it did change my mind on the argument.

Denton 8 Sifferlin, Alexandra. Why BMI Isnt The Best Measure for Weight (or Health). Time. Time Inc., 26 Aug. 2013. Web. 17 Mar. 2014.

The main argument in this article in Time magazine is the fact that the BMI scale doesnt not properly measure some as obese. It states in the article, if your BMI is above 30 then you are considered obese. Alexandra Sifferlin says more researchers argue that its not the most accurate way to measure body weight. For years, scientists have said that BMI cant distinguish between fat and muscle, which tends to be heavier and can tip more toned individuals into overweight status, even if their fat levels are low. She also states that there are different kinds of fat, there is healthy fat unhealthy fat, and BMI scales do not measure them correctly. The point of this article is to prove the viewers that the BMI scale is not a great way to determine if some one is obese or not. The article is about a doctor who is giving good examples to why the BMI scale should not be used to calculate obesity. This source was very useful because it was the only source I found that actually gave facts of why the BMI scale makes miscalculations. It is much like my other sources because the article is written by a doctor and it is an online magazine that is very reliable. This source is not bias, it is objective because Dr. Sifferlin is not trying to change anyones decision on the issue, she is just stating the flaws of the BMI scale. The goal of this source is to explain to viewers why the BMI scale is not the most accurate way to measure if someone is obese. It does not calculate muscle or healthy fat. It only goes by height and weight. This source was helpful because it was the only source I found that explained, in detail, why the BMI scale was flawed. This helps shape my argument in the aspect of obesity not being a disease, because if the BMI scale is wrong then some people may be falsely proclaimed as obese. I can use this in my research project to further establish the argument that obesity should not be considered a disease because some people considered obese are actually healthy. This actually aided my argument on this topic, I believe that obesity should not be considered a disease and this article is a great source to add to my sources that support my decision.
