Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson Name of Book: Frog Is Hungry Level: D

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? Today was a short lesson because the students in my class were all wired because its the last day of the week and they were having an ice cream and iPad party later today. The focus was on making predictions and telling the setting. The students made predictions before reading the book, while reading the book, and discussed them after reading the book. The students also had to pick out the setting of the book.

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn? The instruction went well although the students werent completely focused on the task at hand. They had much more exciting things on their minds than the book we were reading today. The students solidified their prediction skills and worked on telling the setting of a book.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading) I always knew that when something exciting was happening later during the day that the students wouldnt be as on task as they could be, but today proved that. My students were reading to be done with the reading activity so they could get all of their other stuff done. My students are reading better and using context clues to make predictions about the text we are reading each week. Their comprehension is very good and they are always able to tell me what they have read.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. Adapted from Developmental Reading Reflection document created by Sarah Mwangi, 06/13

Like the past weeks, my students sometimes dont look at the word they are supposed to be reading and they make it up. I remind them to try it again and they usually always get it right the second go around. They like to just look at the first letter of the word and say the first word that pops into their mind. This is a habit that has to be broken and my students are getting better and breaking this cycle.
