Minds on: 15 - Have students sit in a circle, each with an index card. - Place a hula hoop in the center and ask one person to put theirs in the middle. How many cards could we fit inside the hoop without overlapping any of them? Have them estimate this (theyll be doing that for their worksheet) - Test their estimate by adding more cards to fill up the hoop Discuss the small areas that arent fully covered the square cards cant fit the whole circular object. Introduce the vocabulary area: the amount of surface an object covers (how many units are needed to cover the face of the object) 5 What other objects can we measure the area of? Bring students to their spots on the carpet. Quickly go over how to fill out the Covering My Favourite Book worksheet Action: 20 Students will complete Covering my Favourite Book in Measurement book Review that our unit of measure will be changing (playing cards, cubes, and sticky notes) but the object we are measuring will not. Choose ONE book - allow students who are struggling to work with a partner who can help them. (Mohammad, Milos, Vaniya, Hira -- Ramel, Carson)

What we want to see: students measuring carefully and properly Consolidation Which books were the biggest? (according to area) Which were the smallest? (according to area)

Students who finish early can choose 4 books find the biggest, find the smallest
