635 Social Studies Strategy Mini Lesson Plan


Purpose & Process What is the name of this strategy? In what grade level could it be used? Concept-Formation 3rd-5th grades

What social studies disciplines can be addressed by this strategy? A variety of different topics: Democracy, Public Issue, Research What is the purpose of the strategy? To show students that ideas usually have misconceptions and can change over period of time. Also, sometimes we believe what the people around us believe, having never researched it for ourselves. Where can information about the strategy be found? Lesson Plan for strategy Goal of your strategy Students will make decisions based on evidence, facts, and their belief systems. Objectives 1. When given a topic the student will choose a side stating 3 or more evidenced based reasons why they chose that side of the argument and receive at least a 3 out of 4 on the rubric 2. When given a topic the student will research using the internet, to find common misconceptions of the topic creating a list of at least 5 topics to show to the class, receiving at least 8 out of 10 on a checklist. Assessment 1. Pre-Assessment to be verbal: What do the students know already? 2. 3. Formative Assessment: Are the students able to follow the directions? Post Assessment: Did the student meet the objectives? Concept Journal evaluations. Parker Chapters 6 and 9

Explain the procedure. (include motivation, activity and wrap up) 1. The teacher will open the class with a warm up activity on democracy. Providing examples on what it means for the majority to win. The teacher will transition into the lesson by teaching democracy and what that looks like here in America.

Strategy Demonstration Newsome 2. Once the lecture is complete the teacher will begin an activity with the students using real life examples: 1. Should the capture of wild animals for aquariums, zoos, circuses and research be allowed? 2. Should people have a background check done before they are allowed to adopt/ own animals? 3. Should animals be taken out of their natural habitat and turned into pets? 3. Allowing the students to choose sides first as Yes or No, then allowing them to partner up and research and provide fact based evidence on the issues. 4. Allowing the groups to show their evidence, the teacher will then ask the students what are some misconceptions can be found in their research on these topics? 5. The students can reflect on their belief systems and what they think/feel in their class concept journals.

What authentic materials are used? The teacher will provide examples that include student participation in the lesson. Ex. _What is democracy? Majority wins looks like what? To be completed by instructor: Does the teacher seem prepared and organized? Are the objectives, assessments and procedures connected? Are the objectives measurable?
