UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

All life is interdependent and interacts with the environment. How do living things interact with one another and with the non-living elements of their environment?

LESSON OBJECTIVE: Students will identify and obtain information about different water animals and habitats through computer research with 100% accuracy. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: GLE0007.5.1 Compare the basic features of plants and animals GLE0207.2.2 Investigate living things found in different places GLE0007.5.1 Use a variety of representations to describe similarities and differences among plants and animals ISTE Standards 1a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

MATERIALS:
http://zunal.com/webquest.php?w=236483 Computer Pencils Paper Internet Access I will use technology to introduce the ocean and ocean life in a fun and exciting way.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: The concept of the lesson is for the children to be introduced to ocean animal and plant life an asses the similarities between them. Academic Language includes; Ocean, World, Crab, Shell, Fish, Coral, and Kelp This lesson connects with and builds on the previous lessons where we have discussed how all living things are interdependent and interact with their environment. This lesson will be a building block for us to begin talking about other habitats and animals. My plan will need differentiated activities and assessments to fit the learning styles of every child in my classroom.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: To introduce this unit to my children we will discuss what they already know about the ocean and in class we will create a list of survival gear that we will need for our ocean exploration. Procedures:
I will split the children into groups of two and assign each group a vocabulary word. The groups will be sent to their computers and placed on my Zunal homepage. I will aid the children to the site and help them read through the online instructions. I will allow the groups twenty minutes at the computer to complete their research. While the children are doing their online research I will be circulating the room to provide assistance as needed and answering questions. After twenty minutes of research I will ask each group to open up a plain document in Microsoft word. I will instruct them to go to insert, click table. Select one column and six rows. I will allow them ten minutes to record their data. I will again be circulating the room to insure that everyone is on task, and assisting. Next after the ten minutes is up I will instruct them to go to the front of the room, one group at a time, and share their findings using the facts in their table. I will allow each group no more than two minutes to present. That will be a total of fourteen minutes for presentations. Once every group has completed their presentations I will use the remainder of my class time, 26 minutes, to create the venn diagram as a class and compare and contrast the information they have obtained. For students with different learning needs I will print off the ocean exploration along with their topic fact sheet. I will then allow those students to complete the assignment by hand. To insure that each group has their own computer device I will sign out the ibook cart from the library. If a group finishes the given assignment there will be an additional assignment to put in place.

Closure: To close the assignment we will pretend to be newscasters for the Seaside Elementary School Newspaper, and each person in the group will have to state their overall favorite fact that they learned for the day.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: The students will be graded based upon the rubric, located on ZUNAL. COM under Assessment. MODIFICATIONS: For students that did not master the objective we will create fact cards with each groups five facts located on the back as a study aid to the student. For students that are enriched in this activity I will assign them the webquest without the fact sheets attached so they will have to go find and record their own information.

Example of Student Assignment
