Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

Keriann Earl Type of lesson: Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan Title: Graham Cracker Plate Tectonics Discipline/Topic: Earth Science Target Population: 10th grade Regents Earth Science students Curriculum Links: This lesson will be a hands on lab activity about plate boundaries, which is part of the Plate Tectonic Unit. Objectives: Students will be able to identify the three types of convergent plate boundaries. Students will be able to describe the process of subduction. Students will be able to explain the theory of plate tectonics. ISTE Student Standards/Profiles Objectives: 2. Communication and collaboration: Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning andcontribute to the learning of others. Materials and Timing: 80 minutes, iPad, Graham Cracker Plate Tectonics Lab Scope and Sequence: 1. At home the previous day students will watch the lecture video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ5DU4iDUIE) 2. In the classroom the next day students will get a copy of the lab labeled Graham Cracker Plate Tectonics. Working in pairs students will use their graham crackers and cool whip to reconstruct the different types of plate boundaries. After each activity students will answer the reinforcement questions as well as draw their data onto the show me app on the iPad. 3. Once finished students will turn in their completed lab as well as have a show me app explaining/drawing the different types of plate boundaries.

Evaluation of Students: (using a rubric)

Objectives Students will be able to identify the three types of convergent plate boundaries. Students will be able to describe the process of subduction. Students will be able to explain the theory of plate tectonics. Needs Improvement- 1 point Student can correctly identify two or less types of plate boundaries on the lab. On the show me app student incorrectly defines the process of subduction. On the show me app student incorrectly defines the theory of plate tectonics. Good/Satisfactory- 2point Student can correctly identify the three types of plate boundaries on the lab. On the show me app student correctly defines the process of subduction. On the show me app student correctly defines the theory of plate tectonics. Excellent- 3 point Students can correctly identify and describe the three types of plate boundaries on the lab. One the show me app student correctly defines and draws the process of subduction. On the show me app student correctly defines and draws the theory of plate tectonics.

Evaluation of the lesson: The lesson will be considered successful if students are able to achieve 9 points on the rubric. If students are not meeting the objectives and not getting the 3 points then adjustment should be made to the lesson for next time. A supplementary worksheet beforehand or guidance with specific websites to look at for research data may need to be added to the lesson.
