Information Processing Model: Lesson Plan Grade: 1st/2nd grade Lesson Objective: Students will engage in a Mad Lib

activity to gain a better understanding of the different parts of a sentence (nouns, verbs, and adjectives). Suggested time: 30-45 minutes Materials: Overhead projector or Smart board Pre-made examples and illustrations to use with projection Labeled noun envelopes (filled with small green cards with a noun written on each one) Labeled verb envelopes (filled with small yellow cards with a verb written on each one) Labeled adjective envelopes (filled with small red cards with an adjective written on each one) Construction paper Colored markers Glue sticks

Procedure: 1. Begin by singing who is listening, who is listening? (to the tune of where is thumbkin?) the students should respond by I-I am, I-I am 2. Once the teacher has gained attention from the students, she will then ask, Who here knows what a Mad Lib is? (The teacher will look for students who have raised hands and will take a few moments to choose a few students to give a brief description of their personal experiences with Mad libs.) If no students are familiar with Mad libs, the teacher will give a brief description. 3. The teacher will then use an overhead projector (or smart board) to provide an example of a normal labeled sentence (ex: The shiny spaceship flew to the moon.) with an illustration of the spaceship. The teacher will be sure to point out the parts of the sentence that are labeled and review what each one means, pausing to let the students fill in the answers, (teacher) a noun is. (class) a person, place, or thing. 4. Then the teacher will explain that Mad libs are done by choosing random nouns, verbs, and adjectives before knowing the rest of the sentence. While doing this, the teacher will use the overhead projector to replace words in the original sentence to make a silly sentence (ex: The smelly lion danced to the moon.) with an illustration of a cartoon lion dancing in space. 5. The teacher will then explain that the class will be doing mad libs as a group activity and then will proceed to separate the class into groups of 3.

6. Each of the three students in each group will be given either a noun envelope, verb envelope, or adjective envelope (so that each group has one of each kind of labeled envelopes). 7. The teacher will then instruct the students to choose one word from their envelope and share it with their group. 8. The teacher will then place a Mad lib sentence on the overhead with labeled blanks (noun, verb, adjective) and then will ask each group to share their words that fill the blanks to create fun and silly sentences. As this is done the teacher will use repetition of the words noun, verb, and adjective along with cues like: person, place, or thing, action word, and describing word. 9. After a few rounds of the activity, the teacher will then pass out paper, markers, and glue to the groups and instruct them to each choose one word from each of the labeled envelopes (resulting in each student having a noun, verb, and adjective). 10. An overhead example will show the students the order they are to glue their chosen words on their paper (with the color of the cards and the description: noun, verb, and adjective illustrated and spaces for the words to be filled in, marked with lines (blanks). 11. When the students are finishing their word placement, the teacher will then place another overhead, this time, with the words of the sentence filled in on the blank spaces. 12. The students will be instructed to illustrate their Mad lib sentence on the bottom half of their paper by drawing a picture with the colored markers provided.
