Reflection on Leadership Standard 3 As a department head, instructional coach, and Professional Learning Community facilitator I am an educational leader who

promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment. In these roles, I sustained a safe, efficient, clean, wellmaintained, and productive school environment that nurtured student learning and supported the professional growth of teachers and support staff. Part of creating a safe and productive environment is dealing with school discipline. While at Potter Junior High School, there was a well-defined system in place with the support of various participating staff members, and I conducted an examination of this system as a part of a field study. Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a way to utilize effective and nurturing practices in establishing student behavior management systems; however, one must be careful to include the issues of sexting and cyberbullying in any discipline plan. I consider myself a visionary, systems thinker that can establish school structures and processes that support student learning. For example, even improving singular issues like tardiness are better served through taking a systems perspective. Utilizing effective systems management, organizational development, and problem-solving and decision-making techniques allows one to approach a new situation like rolling out Common Core and be able to take steps toward continuous improvement. It can also help you in aligning fiscal, human, and material resources to support the learning of all subgroups of students. For example, I identified the lack of enough instructional minutes for middle school English learners and all

sixth grade learners as an issue at Mary Fay Pendleton School, and I suggested a new master schedule to align the needs of these subgroups with fiscal and human resources. Once programs and staff are aligned both need to be monitored and evaluated on a regular basis, which I have experience with as an instructional coach. I also took great care as an instructional coach when performing job-embedded professional development and working with student placement and intervention information to manage legal and contractual agreements and records in ways that fostered a professional work environment and secure privacy and confidentiality for all students and staff. Next steps include applying a systems perspective of improvement to Mary Fay Pendleton school through meetings with our new principal and involvement in the site leadership team, especially in the areas of discipline, common core instruction, and implementation of the middle school model.
