ThirdGrade:LibrarySkillsUnit Week1

OBJECTIVE: The learner will work in pairs (or groups of three) to examine the non-fiction section of the library by taking a "Dewey Walk" and presenting their findings to the class. LESSON PRESENTATION ANTICIPATORY SET: -Review behavior notes -Tell students we are going to examine how the Non-fiction section of the library is organized today. What is non-fiction? What is a call number? -Have students examine the NF books on their library table, what do they notice about the call numbers? (numerical, followed by 3 letters of authors last name) INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Split students into 10 groups and assign each group a Dewey Decimal Range. Have students go to their selected section, browse, and write what type of books can be found there, keywords, etc. on their index card. The group can also select one book from that section that they found to be interesting. -Each group will quickly present to the class their findings from their Dewey Walk. Their index cards & selected interesting books will be put on display the next week as a reminder of the DDS walk. -Students will move to computers. Teacher will briefly explain the DDS and its origins. Show students Melvil Dewey's biography on biography.com (review meaning of term biography). -Group will watch "The Dewey Decimal Rap" video. CLOSURE: -Remind students about the "Books for Skoob" contest & procedures -Show students how to navigate to OPALS from home so that they may do online book reviews while not in school -Familiarize students with the take home guide for getting on OPALS from home -Book selection ASSESSMENT: Dewey walk presentations

The learners will classify books in their appropriate Dewey range by using their smart responders and the Dewey Decimal Guide paper. The learner will practice virtually shelving books using the library shelver website. LESSON PRESENTATION ANTICIPATORY SET: -Review Behavior -How is non-fiction organized? After students share what they know, teacher will quickly review the dewey decimal system. -Teach students how to use smart responders INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Dewey Decimal Classification Smart Responder File. Ask students why they chose that answer. Week3

OBJECTIVE: The learner will practice virtually shelving books using the library shelver website. The learner will practice locating library books on the shelves using OPALS during the Dewey Decimal Scavenger Hunt. LESSON PRESENTATION ANTICIPATORY SET: -Review Behavior -How is non-fiction organized? After students share what they know, teacher will quickly review the dewey decimal system.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Show students the virtual shelver. Practice shelving a few books together as a class. Give students a few minutes to shelve on their own. -http://www.mrs-lodges-library.com/shelver/ -Tell students we are having a scavenger hunt. They will be split into teams and they will use OPALS/ their knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System to complete it. Each team will get a scavenger hunt list (8 teams, 2-3 people on each). Each list is unique, but equally challenging. The scavenger hunt will require students to locate a book in the catalog, write down the call #,

and locate the actual book on the shelf. Correct books will have "Dewey Dollars" taped on the back cover so that they know they found a winning book. Each team will start with $200 Dewey Dollars, if they need a hint for finding a book, it will cost $100 per hint. The team with the most Dewey Dollars at the end of the class, wins.

CLOSURE: -Answer any questions students had during the scavenger hunt, show students how to locate books they could not find. -Book Checkout ASSESSMENT: library shelver scavenger hunt results

LESSON PRESENTATION ANTICIPATORY SET: -Review behavior -What do you know about library organization so far? INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Review "Our Library" organizational Power Point as a class -Show students ABC order on Library Shelver -Use smart responders to sort books into appropriate library sections, E, FIC, NF. Week5

OBJECTIVE: The learner will familiarize themselves with the location of library resources by participating in the library relay.

LESSON PRESENTATION ANTICIPATORY SET: -Review Behavior -Review three main sections of the library & their call numbers: NF, Fiction (picture books), Fiction (chapter books) -Divide students into 4 groups @ their library tables. -Explain library relay rules and procedures to the students. Each team has a stack of cards with different call numbers on them. They must go in order. During each round, one student from each team must go and find that card's book and bring it back to the table. There is absolutely no running, jogging, or fast walking since it is a library. If a team member does run, they lose points. Before each round, students will be able to discuss location & strategy with their teammates, they will be reminded of respectful group discussion techniques. When the teacher indicates it is time to go, the team member whose turn it is will take their shelf marker, walk over to their area, locate their book, and bring it back to the table. The first team to have their member return back gets 4 points, second back 3, third back 2, fourth back 1, if they can't locate the book in a reasonable time, then they receive no points. The team at the end of the relay with the most points, wins "free" computer time (after book checkout they may go on pre-approved sites, such as PBS kids). INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: -Library relay CLOSURE: -Answer any questions from the relay -Book checkout ASSESSMENT: Student location of books MATERIALS/TECHNOLOGY: easel board to keep score library relay cards shelf markers
