Arts I 8th-10th Week of: Thursday, April 8 to Tuesday, April 22 Unit Name: Hybrid Paintings with Watercolor Pencil/Crayon

Common Core/ NM Content Standards: NMVA-I, II, IV,V,VI, Essential Question(s): What is a hybrid? What are examples in nature? How can I create my own unique hybrid creature? Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students are familiar with hybrids from science class Students are familiar with watercolor paints, so it wont be difficult to learn watercolor pencil/crayon

Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): Students who are advanced can do several pieces Students needing assistance will get more one-on-one help from the teacher

Resources/Materials Teacher: Images of hybrid paintings Students: Watercolor paper Pencil, watercolor pencil, watercolor crayons

Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Daily observations of students working on hybrids This Week: Sketch of hybrid animal Unit: Final hybrid & participation in critique

Lesson activities for instructor and students

THURSDAY APRIL 8 Learning Target-TSW learn about hybrids and will view various examples of hybrid artwork, and will then sketch out his or her own hybrid. TSW know this when he/she completes his/her sketch. FRIDAY APRIL 9 Learning Target- TSW learn how to use watercolor pencils and crayons to create various blending effects. TSW know this once his/her piece displays at least 2 of these effects. MONDAY APRIL 14 Learning TargetTSW learn how to use form and line to create a hybrid. TSW know this once his/her drawing makes strong use of form and line. TUESDAY APRIL 15 Learning Target TSW learn how to use color to create a hybrid. TSW know this once his/her drawing makes strong use of color WEDNESDAY APRIL 16 Learning Target TSW learn how to use contrast to create a hybrid painting. TSW know this once his/her drawing makes strong use of contrast.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 23 Learning TargetTSW learn how to participate effectively in a critique. TSW know this when he/she has given several strong points of feedback to presenters.
