PHILOSOPHY

I am guided by a concern for our holistic development as self-aware persons, learners and engaged citizens of our communities. As such, my work is to be with others- student and colleague- in transition, whether that be transition into the University environment, transition from a previous way of thinking and being, transition into a new role, or a transition off campus and on to a new arena. I understand that we are always beings in the act of becoming- that who we are and what stage we have reached are always fleeting, and that the task of liberatory education is learning to derive as much as possible from these passing states and to use it to discover and create what remains when all else is striped away. We are always in transition, whether it be learning to navigate a new academic and social environment, becoming familiar with ones internal landscape, utilizing new frameworks to understand our world, or seeking to understand what seems strange in another person or context. As a professional, I endeavor to serve as a thoughtful advisor and companion to others in this process. I understand that to do so I must be able to listen to the stories of others, as well as my own, to gain insight as to who we are and where we are at so that we may walk together in our journey. I must endeavor always to approach others-student and colleague- with a deep appreciation for our humanity and diversity, and honor this with them. Our shared humanity is a tie that binds us in a mutual pursuit of the work of human lives. Our experiences of this world will provide the map and light to guide us in shaping our future values, beliefs, and actions. By sharing these parts of myself in our pursuit, I can seek to learn and grow alongside those with whom I work in word and in deed. Thus, in continually endeavoring to become a better professional, I will be constantly striving to be a better learner, citizen, and self to model what I hope to encourage in others. In order to do this, I must be willing to face in and for myself challenges that I hope to support and encourage others through, whether it be taking fearful steps into the unknown, coming to understand the limits of
