Experiment 2 PENETRATION TEST OBJECTIVE : To determine the consistency of asphalt cements as when it is delivered and after heating APPARATUS

: Penetration Needle Penetrometer Water Bath Thermometer Penetration Cylinder Transfer dish

Procedure 1. The asphalt is heated to a temperature of C. to prevent overheating, the asphalt is stirred occasionally, later it poured into the penetration cylinder and left to cool to room temperature for one hour. 2. After the asphalt has cooled to room temperature, it is places in water bath at a constant temperature of 25 C for one hour. 3. Sample is removed from water bath and is placed in the transfer dish which contains water at a constant temperature of 25 . 4. Penetration needle is placed touching the surface of asphalt and the penetrometer is set to zero 5. The needle is loaded with a 100g weight and was allowed to penetrate the asphalt cement for 5 seconds. The depth of penetration is measured in units of 0.1mm
