WELCOME TO WORLD LITERATURE!

This class is based on the belief that you are capable of producing high quality work and of achieving high academic standards. Every student is expected to work hard, make progress, and create work that meets or exceeds the standard. This class will help you no matter what you do after high school. The ability to read, write, listen, and speak effectively is essential to your success in todays world. COURSE OBJECT !ES RE"# N$ This course will provide an introduction to significant works from Asia, the iddle East, Africa, and !atin America" these works will include novels, poetry, nonfiction, and short stories. #hile reading and responding to the diverse works of literature included in this curriculum, you will learn how to negotiate challenging texts and become a stronger reader and thinker. $The course will focus on the following core texts% Haroun and the Sea of Stories, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Much Ado About Nothing, Lord of the Flies, Things Fall Apart, Purple Hibiscus, and Persepolis. WR T N$ &n ninth grade, students focus on the ma'or components of the five(paragraph essay, with particular emphasis on how to develop and support a thesis. The course will also incorporate other types of writing, such as 'ournal(type responses and creative writing assignments. $R"MM"R )rammar will be taught on an as(needed basis. *tudents will be expected to know and demonstrate proper grammar in their essays. The class will focus on writing style and mechanics as they relate to the writing process. !OC"BUL"R% *tudents will receive a list of +,-- ost .ommonly /sed *.A.T. #ords.0 Each week, the class will be assigned fi e new words from the list. 1n weekly qui22es, the students will be responsible for those five words, as well as any previously assigned words. Each category will count as --8 of the total grade for the course. &. 5arti,i.ation and 5re.aration $including pro'ects, homework, classwork, oral presentations, and class participation7 *. Tests and 7ui99es -. Writing $including reader responses, 'ournals, essays, and creative writing assignments7 Assignments that contain any plagiari2ed content, or assignments3tests3qui22es on which cheating of any kind has taken place, will receive a grade of :8. Also, talking during a test or qui2 will result in a grade of :8 for that test or qui2. 5ROCE#URES "BSENCES

8egular attendance is required, as classroom activities play an important role in the course. 9owever, you will be assigned a homework partner. &f you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact your homework partner to get any missed assignments. 6our partner also will collect any handouts you missed during your absence. & also will be able to assist students, particularly if you are absent for an extended period of time. 9owever, you are expected to contact your homework partner first. According to school policy, students are allowed two days per each day of absence within which to make up work. Long-term assignments, for which students have a week or more advance notice, must be submitted on the first day back from an excused absence. $After that time, the assignments will be considered late, and points will be deducted.7
