The purpose of this text is to entertain while allowing the reader to explore what it would be like to permanently leave your community and family and adjust to new surroundings while in the mist of a uncertain and dangerous time for society. As is typical of the genre, the author sticks with a plot that is relatable, finding ones way in the world and sets an uncharacteristic society in a familiar setting, Chicago, while exploring a dystopian world that is ever changing. The book is categorized as Young adult, and while it attracts younger readers due to the age of the characters and the high-schoolesque love story plot, dystopian books tend to attracts a much wider audience.

a Dystopian world Heroines verses or instead of heroes The dynamics of control and isolation

The purpose of this text is to entertain in a varity of ways. It could be as simple as a way to pass time, especially because this is a rather short book for its genre. However this text is written in a way that it provides an escape for the reader by allowing the reader to follow the characters as they try to adjust and survive in their new, cruel environment. As is typical of the genre, the author sticks with a plot that is relatable to the reader, young people finding their way and falling in love, while adding at extra element because of the dystopian world they live in. By touching on things that the general public knows can occur, brain-washing and manipulation, but taking them to an unusually high level, the author relates while still stepping outside the norm and causing the reader to think. The book is categorized as Young adult, but the idea of a dystopian world and all of the adventures and struggles that go along with that type of environment attracts a wider audience.

Dystopian worlds Survival Methods/Instincts

The purpose of this text is to entertain while allowing the reader to speculate as to what life would be life if people could time travel within their own lives and into other peoples. As is typical of the genre, the author sticks with a plot that is relatable to the reader, young people finding their way and falling in love, while adding at extra element because the main male character is a time traveler. The book is categorized as Young adult, but the idea of time travel and how it would affect one as the traveler or their relative attracts a wider audience. Also this book is not divided into chapters, but instead it is marked by dates and switches between the two main characters perspectives. So by design it may speak to a slightly older audience since it is a little harder to follow the plot when it is broken up in this manner.

Time-travel Romance

Science Fiction as a genre tends to focus on futuristic things such as time travel or teleportation, and or times and places as in a dystopian world. While it tends to delve into these out of reach ideals one thing writers often use to keep the reader engaged is to relate them to current times or ideas. By doing this they can explore alternate dimensions or technologies while still keeping it relatable to the reader. The purpose of this style of writing or story-telling in the case of movies or plays, is to entertain mainly but also to expand the readers mind by causing them to wonder how things would change or their life would be if a certain technology or alternate society existed. Due to its purpose, sci-fi attracts a rather wide audience because many people are interested in these types of futuristic ideas. For these texts in particular, the main characters and heroes/heroines are younger individuals, at least for parts of the book, with love interests ties into the plots so they tend to attract a young adult audience, but they are not limited to that category. As these books vary in length, specific topics, and setup (standard chapters verses switching between narrators), they attract different audiences, they just tend to overlap as far as age brackets are concerned. Power and privilege play a role in a persons ability to be a part of the audience for this genre. On the most basic level one must be able to read and understand the content. But unfortunately just because one can read does not grant them have a way to physically access the material. While most people have access to a bookstore or a library in suburban and urban areas in more rural areas even if they have these types of places, they are less likely to receive new books or magazines and if they do they often do not have multiple copies of recent material making it harder for people to access the information. Especially if they do not have internet access or a way to access it that would allow them to read or order material online.
