Jacobs 16 April 2014 Annotated Bibliography for: The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket: Analyzing its Cultural Context and the Role of Fate and Love in Japanese Culture. Kawabata, Yasunari. "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket." The Norton Introduction to Literature. Alison, Booth. J. Paul Hunter and Kelly J. Mays. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., 2006. 366 - 368. This source is the most important of all, for it provides me with the text of the story I am analyzing itself. Based on the story The Grass Hopper and the Bell Cricket) I will be proving my points on how the culture of Japan and the concepts of love and fate are viewed by the author. One of the main subjects I will be analyzing to prove such are the purpose of the comparison between the grasshopper and the bell cricket, the childrens role in portraying the themes of love and fate, and the setting this were viewed in. As well as my other sources, this one is an objective and non-biased source of information. Therefore, I will stand by it and prove the point I am trying to make in my paper by providing quotes and direct citations from this book. Hopefully this will be one of the most influential medium of information to prove such.

Hernandez 2 Overview: The Grasshoper and the Bell Cricket. Short Stories for Students. Ed. Sara Constantakis. Vol. 29. Detroit: Gale, 2010. Literature Resource Center. Web. 26 Mar. 2014. In this source I found a shorter version of the plot summary. It is the shortest source I will be using to back up my paper, therefore I will use it for some detailed information about the story. It also includes a short version of the storys character analysis that provides the specific roles of them in the piece. This source has a shorter plot summary than the one provided by the Virtual Reference article but it provides me different details in comparison with the above mentioned. It is also a credible and objective source but it has a more concise explanation of the story. I might not make a direct use of this on my paper, but it is a good source of background information. "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket." Short Stories for Students. Ed. Sara Constantakis. Vol. 29. Detroit: Gale, 2010. 146-170. Gale Virtual Reference Library. Web. 26 Mar. 2014. This source provides me with some important background information on the author. It contains and in-depth analysis of his piece which will help me understand the details behind the symbolism and certain themes used throughout such work. For example, the paper lanterns the children made represent the individualism and hard work the kids put on making the best out of everyone elses. The story itself is also a symbolism of life and the human strive for the best. Also, this source contains a section about the historical context found in the story which gave me a different point of view about the piece. With this credible and objective source I plan to get biographical information on the author. This will help me further understand the authors intention in relation to his culture,

Hernandez 3 values, and, potentially, past experiences. It would also aid me in backing up my ideas about the story in the themes and types of criticism found in the piece. The Red String of Fate. Tumblr, 2011. Web. 12 April 2014. This blog provided me with some extra information about some cultural context of fate in Japanese culture. Although it might not be an academic source it does give me some interesting insight on the idea of The Red String of fate. This idea has been partially brought by the Japanese culture and it believes soul mates are tied by an invisible red string to one of each others fingers so as to signal they were always meant to be. I would like to incorporate some of these ideas to my paper. Perhaps to make some comparison or contrast between that and the idea portrayed by the author with the use of the lanterns. This source might not be as credible and substantial as the other ones I will be making use of in the paper but the ideas I encountered here gave me the idea of how the culture of Japan has many more superstitions about love and fate than the one brought up in the story. It may not be as relatable to the topic but it somehow helped me back up the idea of how Japan has a vast amount of beliefs around love and its natural and supernatural course. WriteWork contributors. "An Analysis of "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket"" WriteWork.com. WriteWork.com, 24 July, 2007. Web. 06 Apr. 2014. With this source I was able to clear out my point of view on the theme of love and how it was represented and explained in the story. The author of this source makes a clear statement about the writers intention behind his writing. He points out the underlying idea that love is not always being right, but accepting each other and their thoughts and opinions (W.W). With this line I plan on expanding my thoughts and build up my paper from there.

Hernandez 4 This source is a little biased, for it is a personal article after all, but it has been key to help further my understanding. It is rather short in length but it has sustainably provided me with a second opinion and point of view towards the story.

"Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972)." Short Story Criticism. Ed. David Siegel. Vol. 17. Detroit: Gale Research, 1995. 233-259. Literature Criticism Online. Gale. 7 April 2014. This source provided me with the right amount of information I needed to start making ideas as to what themes and topics I should cover in my paper. It gave me all of the points one needs to know about a piece in order to be able to analyze it. From the themes that underlay in the story to the types of criticisms that can be applied to it. I will be working on writing my essay based on some of the important points provided in this text, specifically the critical eye applied to it. This source is the longest in comparison with all of the ones I selected. Since it comes from an objective source, it is safe to assume that all of the information provided within this text is credible and functional towards my research.
