Title: Speech Power Point Presentation Date: Summer 2012 Artifact Description: The following artifact is a power-point presentation

for a speech I presented to my teacher and colleagues at Highland Community College in Freeport, IL. The speech was eight minutes long and talked about the positive and negative effects of coffee. This power-point includes all the content I discussed and pictures to support this. Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standard Alignment: This experience best aligns with standard six: Communication- The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction in the classroom. This best aligns with Standard six because during this speech I used a power point presentation to instigate both verbal and nonverbal cues to express my personal opinions and facts that I researched. Some nonverbal cues included facial expression, appropriate pauses, and hand gestures. Likewise, I gave weight to certain words to show emphasis, increased and decreased my volume as it deemed appropriate, and increased and decreased speed in the same manner. I used instructional media (the power point presentation) to teach my peers about my chosen topic. During the presentation my fellow classmates and teacher were being taught visually and aurally at the same time. This was done by loading my flash drive to the classroom computer and clicking next when I was ready to go from slide to slide. Finally, my presentation was on a topic in which opposing sides could be expressed, thus I presented both sides equally without giving any emphasis to one or the other. At the end of the speech and power point presentation I left the audience with the statement: Now that you have heard both sides, is coffee good or bad for you, or both? With doing this, I left the audience thinking and left them ample opportunity to express their own opinions without an open discussion. I am more experienced with this standard because I was able to use both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques through technology to present my information Additionally, I was able to create an environment that was conversational, and thus, interactive, exciting, and unique. Communication is a skill that is solely a verb, the only way to improve is to practice, practice, and practice. UW-Platteville School of Educational Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD3.a: The candidates spoken and written language are correct, expressive and clear, with well-chosen vocabulary that enriches teaching and communicates thoughtfully, responsively, and effectively for a wide range of student understanding and encourages appropriate student language development.

This experience of presenting a speech best aligns with KSD3a because I was able to speak with clear diction, talked at a comfortable pace, and used descriptive vocabulary during my presentation to my peers. It is imperative while speaking to a group of people to do those things, which is why I practiced in such a manner to perform efficiently. During my speech if I felt the audiences reaction was showing confusion, I simply said the previous phrase in a different matter. After doing this, I was confident that I was being understood when introducing a concept in different ways. I used language that my peers would understand and comprehend well. I had great preparation do this efficiently as I had been in class with my peers for many weeks at the point of this presentation. This proved to be an effective way of teaching. I am more competent and aware of the importance of speaking clearly and using appropriate adjectives and terms to your audience because of this speech. This experience showed me that even while talking about something as common as coffee, the way it is presented plays a large role in determining how well the students will comprehend and retain the information. Today, when I speak in front of classes I consciously remember back to what I learned after the last speech I gave and do my best to improve my communication skills. Secondary KSDs: KS1.d. Demonstrates knowledge of resources Reflection: What I learned about teaching/learning: After reflecting on this experience it is apparent to me that when you are in front of a classroom, you must know how to communicate the idea you are trying to get across in multiple ways. Everyone learns differently and because of this you must be flexible and comfortable enough with your material that you are able to present an idea in more than one way. When using this multiple teaching strategies, teachers must incorporate ways to gage if students comprehend the information being presented. Preparation is key to a situation like this; while it is important to be able to flexible and improvise, having a plan for how to present, and having practiced out loud, will help the presentation immensely. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: I learned that when I am teaching, I must be prepared and confident enough to accommodate all of the students. It is important for me to practice teaching in multiple ways to be able to make the idea I am trying to get across as clear as possible. This can be mastered only by doing, I can plan as much as possible and still fail to be clear in my lectures and discussions. However, when I practice and work hard to improve my abilities to use different approaches, technologies, and videos it enables me to develop a routine of how to present a concept to a classroom efficiently. I find myself naturally being able to communicate well in front of large groups of people, due to

having five siblings and being part of speech team in high school. I strive to improve on my speaking vocabulary, fluidity, and clarity each time I speak.
