Rate of Reactions

What if it took three years to bake a cake but your car ruste I in 2 days? Sometimes there are advantages to speeding up reactions and sometimesther are advantages to slowing down reactions. What are some of the factors that deterrnin how fast a reaction will occur? You find out. What are factors that affect the rate of a chemical re action?

Formulate hypotheses for the factor, you plan to test Use what you already know or play around with some of the supplies. Outline your procedures. You will need separate pro .edures for each factor. Check you procedure with me before you begin.

Choose 1reaction to test your hypotheses. Antacid and tap water or Magnesium and 1M HCI or Baking soda and 3 % acetic acid

Things to consider: You may have a very good idea of what the factors are but y u need to gather enough' data to convince me - and let me tell you, I may not be easily convinced. (e.g. You try one thing one time and make a conclusion - I won't be convi cedl) Once you have your conclusion you need to test its ability to nake predictions by applying it to at least 1 of the other reactions. (i.e, You did s mething to make your reaction speed up. Now, does it make one of the other reactio 1S speed up? Try it.) What does this have to do with colliding particles? How did tour treatment (procedure) cause the collisions to change? Generally: .

For each hypothesis you will need a procedure, data table, grs h, analyze data, and logical conclusion based on your data. You will need to conduct a reaction and get a rate you can us as a baseline (something to compare your procedures to).
