I selected to teach my science lesson entitled Mystery Eggs as my showcase lesson. The lesson includes a pre-assessment, during assessment, and post-assessment. All of these assessments were created to evaluate the students learning of the lesson objective. The objective for this lesson is: Third grade students will be able to understand and explain how the vibrations of different objects effect sound. All the activities in this lesson are based on vibrations creating sound when transferred through materials. I chose to use a hands-on activity that would allow students to connect specific sounds to things that they may use everyday. The purpose of the pre-assessment is to determine the students prior knowledge of what sounds are and what kinds of things create them. The concept of vibrations being transferred between materials has not yet been taught to these students, so any prior knowledge they have would be from outside the classroom. The purpose of the during assessment is to make sure that students are staying on task, and are communicating with their peers. The purpose of the post-assessment is to make sure students participated in learning during the lesson. My pre- and post-assessment are similar in the way of asking the student questions. This is so that results can be compared, and I can see that the students actually gained new knowledge on the topic of sound. For the pre-assessment, I will pass out a two question hand-out during guided reading time, and give directions for students to read and answer each question. 1) When you hear the word Vibration what does it remind you of? 2) Can vibrating materials make a sound? I will make sure that the students know that it is okay if they do not know the answers to each question. I will ask them to write down what they think is best for the answer. After they have completed the questions, they will be collected for me to review. For the during assessment, the students will be informally assessed by observing their participation in the activity with their partner, and recording their observation of the activity. The students will go from station to station

and make predictions about what type of material/object is inside of each egg. Then they will deliberate with their partner to decide on a prediction of the material/object, which will be recorded in a t-chart format in their science notebooks. This portion of the assessment will need to be completed in order for students to complete the post assessment. For the post-assessment, the students will come back for whole group discussion. I will unveil the materials/objects in each egg, which they will again record in their t-chart. The class will discuss the volume and pitch of the sounds, and see how those two things relate to specific types of materials/objects. After all of the eggs have been shown, students will individually copy down and answer a set of questions that relate to the activity in their science notebooks. 1) What kind of materials/objects were the loudest? 2) Which kind of materials/objects were the softest? 3) Why is it that metal transfers vibrations easier than fabric? 4) Which eggs sound did you like the most? After they have completed these questions they will turn in their science notebook to be scored. The post assessment will be given a score of 1,2,3, or 4. A score of 4 points indicates that the student has correctly answered and participated in all three parts of the assessment. A score of 3 points indicates that the student has correctly answered three out of the four questions and mostly participated in all three parts of the activity. A score of 2 points indicates that the student has correctly answered only two out of four questions and occasionally participated in all three parts of the activity. A score of 1 point indicates that the student has answered less than two of the questions correctly and has made little effort in participating in all three parts of the activity. For the assessments, some students may require accommodations. The ESOL students in my class may need a translated hand-out and the resource students will need to have all questions read aloud to them. I will modify instructions as needed.

Lesson Objectives

Assessments

Format of Formative Assessments Pre: A two question hand-out will be given to students to assess their prior knowledge. During: Students will be observed to make sure that they are participating and staying on task during the activity. Post: Whole group discussion of each egg with the class and review questions about the activity will be collected. These will be recorded in science journals.

Accommodations

Third grade students will be able to understand and Pre-Assessment During Assessment explain how Post-Assessment the vibrations of different objects effect sound.

For the assessments, some students may require accommodations. The ESOL students in my class may need a translated hand-out and the resource students will need to have all questions read aloud to them. I will modify instructions as needed.
