How does being a member of a Greek organization (aka fraternity or sorority) affect ones social perspective on campus?

The six resources I used, five being academic and one being a fieldwork study composed of interviews, will help me answer my main question by surrounding the issue and supporting it based on factual evidence first, with inferences being drawn to support a conclusion formed from the data I collect on campus. This is important to me because I am directly affected, being a member of the fraternity Delta Sigma Phi, and I wish to clarify not only my own understanding but those who might have similar conflicted thoughts. The purpose of this research is to educate myself and those around me on why people make certain decisions, and to determine whether these decisions have anything to do with being Greek affiliated or not. Our social perspective is what determines the daily choices we make on campus, whether they be good or bad, and I want to create some sort of understanding that can be bridged between everyone. If an initial understanding can be formed, that will be the first step to reducing tension and killing stereotypes, and hopefully along with, the reasons for those stereotypes.

Greek Membership: The Relationship with First-Year Academic Performance

From this study I am going to write about the scientific studies that have been done on members of the Greek community who rushed in the fall versus those in spring. The importance of this is to create an initial understanding on whether the time of joining influences ones social behavior or whether it be reverse, being that your social behavior suggests when you would be more comfortable rushing. This will be an attempt to eliminate unnecessary variable in an effort to minimize conflicts in order to place emphasis on whatever conclusion that is formed from the research gathered. By doing so, I will be explicating information from the study that will answer my key question from a quantitative database and forming a conclusion based on inferences from the data in order to create some sort of correlation between social and academic decisions, and Greek membership on a numerical scale. This study contains quantitative data that compares when people rush versus their academic progress, and so it allows for an objective approach to the conclusions formed.

Liquor before beer, youre in the clear: binge drinking and other risk behaviors among fraternity/sorority members and their non-Greek peers

This paper will be used as a reference in order to extract, from a quantitative perspective, all the negative connotations and stereotypes of members of Greek life and separate those that are true, from those that are false. There are plenty of observations that people view of fraternity members especially, however that doesnt indicate that it is the fault of those in

Greek life, for there is always external variables. There are countless possibilities of explanations, however I will be attempting to narrow down the risks and negativities of being Greek affiliated. This stereotyping tends to actually reinforce the behaviors of fraternities and encourage those who only seek this kind of lifestyle to join and accumulate into the Greek society. Societys common misconceptions about the frat life cause this, and further maintain this cycle of negative karma to be continued leading to more hazing, alcohol binging, sexual harassment, etc. The study brings out frat boys who tend to not contribute to the overall fraternity, and are in fact liabilities because they slack off and bring a bad image to the group. However, as much as they smudge the reputation, this causes the good to be overlooked in the individual and the organization.

Four Rules for Saving a Fraternity

This paper will be used to connect the second paper to the fourth, by showing that there are those of us who understand the consequences and negativities of being Greek, and are attempting to change this image that has been engraved into society. Although, the abrupt changes tend to occur after some sort of drastic incident, and usually mark the end of an organization, there are some members who realize their mistakes and end up changing the fraternity for the better and yield results as expected of the fraternity. This social revolution of the fraternity is what was expected from its initial founding, so it isnt that all social organizations have ill intentions, it simply means that some have lost their main objectives. As long as there are still a few of us who have the correct mentality and want to be in a fraternity that not only passes accreditation but also contributes more to the surrounding

community, the possibility of a Brotherhood of men who are socially and academically successful will live on. In this paper, a fraternity makes an abrupt face from trouble to becoming role models in their Greek community, and according to their president, caused by following four simple rules.

Self-Efficacy and Learning in Sorority and Fraternity Students

As well as there are stereotyped negatives to joining a fraternity or sorority, the opposite side of the spectrum shows that there are also benefits as well, or else the whole concept and idea of Greek organizations would have died out long ago. This study looks into the relationships between self-efficacy and affiliation. Being a member of an organization, whether it be Greek or not, provides a sense of community, however being a part of a Brotherhood creates even stronger bonds which when utilized properly can lead to success in countless fields. Academic, social, economic and more types of success can be traced to people being encouraged by those around them, and by being in a brotherhood this relationship can either bring people up, or tear them down. These decisions follow people and can influence them in other choices that they make whether it be for themselves, their fraternity or sorority, or anyone else close to them. Personally, my fraternity requires all new members to spend a minimum of 15 hours during their pledging process in the library per week. This causes a habit to be formed, and a group is consistently always present in the library pushing each other to strive academically.

LAWRENCE U. ENDS FRATERNITIES' RIGHT TO HOUSING PRIVILEGES

Although being in a fraternity or sorority can be seen as a simple cause or decision, the entitlement of having letters and being affiliated with a brotherhood or sisterhood is a right and an opportunity. However, the prestige can become poison, and the line between entitlement and privilege can be blurred. I will be using this paper to bring out the conflicts between those that are Greek and non-Greek in an attempt to clarify any misunderstandings between the two and explain why might some have these emotions toward the other. In order to reinforce and inferences or other conclusions I come up with from this study, I will be conducting personal interviews with UCF Greek and non-Greek affiliated Fraternity and Sorority members. This means people who are in a fraternity or sorority, and also people who know of the Greek life but arent officially a part of it. This source has quotes and emotions poured out from Frat guys and Fraternity Brothers and shows that the difference in mentality also contributes to differences in social achievement.

Interviewed UCF Greek and non-Greek affiliated Fraternity and Sorority members

The questions I intend to ask my interviewees will fall along the lines of: Why did you, or did you not, join a Greek organization? How did you come up with this opinion? (Who did you hear this from? Where did you read this from? Etc.) What would you say is a benefit of being involved/not involved? What would you say is a negative of being involved/not involved?

What do you wish could be different about your lifestyle concerning those in Greek/non-Greek life?

From these questions, and possibly more questions that I might come up with, I intend to form some sort of grasp on the mentality of people in college who have an opinion on Greek life. Their responses will help me establish an external view outside of my own about my main question and will help me compare and contrast answers to determine if there is a cause to similarities and differences.
