Sensory efficiency Adaptive sweeping.

Student: TJ

Date: 3/19/2014

TJ is really competitive and motivated by gaming. I hope that presenting the sweeping in more of a game or contest formatt he will be more motivated to do well. He has been assigned to sweep before during class chores- however he has struggled with holding the broom correctly and mastering the correct movement of sweeping itself. If he is not watched closely he will not perform the chore at all- and will whip out his phone and start playing on it.

Teacher: Ms. Martinez

Objectives Given a broom, TJ will sweep the floor is order to sweep a jingle bell into a dust pan on 4 out of 6 opportunities. Given a broom- TJ will sweep the floor using left to right- front to back method and using a bell to keep track of his dust pile. Given a broom, TJ will exhibit appropriate sweeping techniques on 5 out of 6 opportunities. (Appropriate techniques include holding the broom with the bristle on the floor, and moving the broom towards his body.) Materials Needed Broom jingle Bells dustpan Hard floor

Introduction of the Lesson Hi TJ! One of the things that we are going to work on is sweeping. I had you sweep last week and you did a great job! I do remember though that you were having some trouble locating your dust pile though. I thought that maybe we could try something today and see if it helps you with your dust pile placement! We are going to use jingle bells. You will use them to mark your durst pile, also to help you remember where you have and have not swept.Lets go ahead and get started!

Play a game! Time you to find the 6 jingle bells and sweep them into the dustpan Sweep again- This time using 1 or 2 bells to keep track of his dust pile. Provide constant verbal feedback/ any tips that are needed. After he finishes sweeping- Play the game again- see if he can beat his time at finding all 6 jingle bells Time how long it takes TJ to find the bells Model moving chairs and sweeping under furniture. Provide any verbal prompting that is needed. Time how long it takes TJ to find the bells

Summary of the Lesson Teaching TJ to sweep has been an uphill battle. Today was the first time I had a planned lesson and an actual goal for him to aim towards- It was also the first time I tried to make it a game. His sweeping was remarkably improved from before the lesson- but he still is not at the level where I could ask him to sweep a room and leave him alone with the task. He is much improved- and was very proud of him speed although I am now worried that this will cause him

to speed through future sweeping task in the future. I am going to continue to monitor and provide support throughout the rest of my time here and encourage him to ask his mother about sweeping at home. Prior to this lesson I was having a hard time communicating the expectations when sweeping with him, and I think the addition of auditory stimulation has made it a little more tangaible. He still seems to needs some verbal prompting, but I think that with time and additional practice he will get to a point where he is able to independently sweep a room. Evaluation of the Lesson Given a broom, TJ will sweep the floor is order to sweep a jingle bell into a dust pan on 4 out of 6 opportunities.

Pre-test. The pretest consisted of observations of TJs sweeping abilities. No other instruction was given other than asking him to sweep a room. His sweeping abilities were monitored before the inclusion of a jingle bell. His performance towards the objectives was recorded below:

Date Objective Holds the broom correctly

3/12 performance and notes No- TJ held the broom at the middle of the handle in an

inefficient grasp Using correct motion to sweep (bring dust towards him) Maintaining a pile Sweeping under tables Sweeping all corners of the room sweep dust into dustpan at completion of room No- TJ used the broom and pushed the broom and dust away from him. This was inefficient as he was not able to track his dust piles. No- TJ did not show any plans or attempts to maintain a pile of dust No- Tj avoided the areas under the tables. No- TJ swept 2 out of the 4 corners. He avoided those with furniture. Yes- Though TJ did sweep his dust into the dustpan, he had not been successful at maintaining a pile- therefore the dust put into the pan was minimal.

It was after watching TJ sweep a room that I realized that he needed some instruction on sweeping skills. I felt that his problem was that he was unable to tell where dust or dirt was. He has very little functional vision, not enough to see dirt and debris on the floor. I therefore wanted to try and help his understand where he needed to sweep by making it a little bit more audible. I went to the store and bought a couple of packets of jingle bells. I used different sizes in order to create variety and I spread them all over the room. In the corners, under the tables and elsewhere. I told TJ how many were on the floor in order to help him know how many to look for. I wanted to play around and find the most effective way to help him sweep, so we also tried to have just one bell to mark his pile.
