Lesson Plan: Robert Peary CCSS: 9-10.

CCSS: 9-10.2-Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the course of the text CCSS: 9-10.3-Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text; determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them Lesson Objective: I can identify Robert Peary given a list of accolades throughout his life. Lesson Objective: I can list two things which enhance the idea that Robert Peary visited the North Pole at the end of his exploration based on various secondary sources. Lesson Objective: I can list two thing which discourage the fact that Robert Peary visited the North Pole at the end of his exploration based on various secondary sources. Lesson Goal: For students to be able to state an opinion about the legitimacy of Robert Peary and his exploration toward the North Pole after analyzing a variety of texts. Essential Question (Why is this important): Did Robert Peary legitimately reach the North Pole? Based on your answer to that question, does this change the significance of Robert Peary as an explorer? -This lesson is designed for students to analyze text and form opinions so that they know not to believe everything they read and to question notions and challenge ideas. It is also designed for students to understand that an argument or opinion must be supported with factual evidence. Agenda: -AS -Read Articles -Write Down Important Details: Worksheet -Debate -Preview Final Assessment Beginning: -AS: Show clip of explorers Middle: -Each student reads articles given to them and annotates any unknown words or confusions about the article -Students also record facts either supporting their answer to the essential question -Debate: Students state their opinion and debate with a partner as to whether or not Robert Peary reached the North pole.

End: -Preview the final cumulative assessment where students will be writing and making an argument for their most intriguing explorers.
