Simpson Reading 2014 - Emperor and the Kite


12:00-12:30--Zoom, Intervention Groups, Read to Self, Imagine Learning Rotation Lesson: The Emperor and the Kite Materials: Trophies Book, Figurative Language PowerPoint, Pencil, Figurative Language Tree Map Daily Objective: SWBAT demonstrate understanding of figurative language. Concept and Skill Development/ Application: -TW start the lesson with a PowerPoint on Figurative Language. -SW discuss figurative language and provide examples in groups, and share with whole class. -TW introduce the figurative language tree map. Students will find examples of figurative language in the text and write it down on the tree map with page number included. -SW read "The Emperor and the Kite" with a partner filling out the figurative language tree map as they read. Literature Circle Groups: -SW read with their groups their literature circle books. -SW work on literature circle roles. -SW complete an exit ticket with two words that they did not know, provide pg. word was on, and definition of word. Assessment: Figurative Language Tree Map, Observation Lemov: SLANT Kagan: Pairs Compare Co-Teaching: One Teach/One Support Teach Related Standards/Objectives: RL.4.1 - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. RL.4.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text. RL.4.3 - Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a characters thoughts, words, or actions). W.4.4 - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in W.4.1-3.) RL.4.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean). RF.4.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.4.4 - Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. SL.4.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. L.4.2 - Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. L.4.4 - Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. L.4.5 - Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

Concept and Skill Development/ Application: -TW start the lesson by going over the vocabulary words. -SW complete the vocabulary worksheet with two more words from the list. -SW continue to read "The Emperor and the Kite" with a partner filling out the figurative language tree map as they read. -TW end the lesson by having the students share the figurative language examples that they found in the text.
