Lesson Plan Highlands Middle, 6th Grade Social Studies Tyler Strayer

Introduction A. Objectives 1. I can create a diagram of the grounds of the ancient games 2. I can create a diagram of the grounds of a modern Olympic site. B. Hook 1. I will tell students they will be creating a site for ancient and modern Olympic games. C. Agenda 1. I will show an example of an ancient and modern Olympic site 2. Students get one partner and poster board and materials 3. Students will create a site of the modern and Olympic games Activities A. I will introduce the sites of the Olympics to the students. I will show them an example of what they ancient games looked like, and make sure they are aware that the temples are as important as the tracks. Then I will show them a more modern example of an Olympic site. B. Students will be put with partners and given a number of materials, including poster board and coloring materials. I will instruct them that they are to create an Olympic site for both the ancient and modern Olympic Games. They obviously must include sites for some of the most common sports found in the Olympics. The ancient diagram will include less sporting area and more religious structures. The modern diagrams will need to be designed to include more of the sporting events. C. When the students are done, we will have a discussion about the primary similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympic sites, and talk about why some of those similarities and differences exist. Closure A. I will thank students for a great week of participation and tell them I had a lot of fun.
