Bio Resume

My love for children has developed steadily ever since my sister was born when I was four. She was born with a heart condition and spent a good part of her first few years at the IWK Children's Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Because of this, at a very young age, I learned the importance of empathy and compassion when working with children in a difficult situation. Since then, helping children, especially sick children, has been a priority to me. I have volunteered at breakfast programs, Cavalier Riding clubs, Make-a-Wish and Moncton Lions Sick Children's Fund, this leading to my enrollment at Universit de Moncton in the Nursing program. I completed my first year, during which I took several psychology courses based on child development that made me really realize my passion for helping children. I also realized that it was not through nursing that I wanted to do this, so I decided to instead further pursue psychology. During these years, I worked with the community room coordinator at Main Street Superstore helping with cooking classes for kids as well as adults, birthday parties and teaching other courses. When the coordinator decided to step down, I was fortunate enough to be offered the job and delightfully accepted. I taught classes for two and a half years by myself, as well as managed the planning and supplies for the room. Being up in front of the kids was an honor and a privilege; and it wasnt long before I realized teaching was the best path for me. I spent another semester at U de M before making the final decision to transfer to Crandall University as a concurrent student in Psychology and Education. It felt like a long journey to figure out what and who I wanted to become, but I am glad I took this path, as it led me to great things. Being a Psychology student allows me to understand many things about children that many others may not. As a student in the Education program, I often see a correlation between the knowledge I gained during my undergrad and the material we are covering in class. Two years ago, Moncton Multiples, which is a support group for families with twins or triplets, approached me about babysitting and being a nanny for some of their families and I happily accepted. I now nanny for a set of 7 year old boys, one of who has developmental problems, multiple times a week. This entails picking them up from school, doing their homework with them and making sure all that needs to be done is done. Doing homework with them positively reinforces my desire to become a teacher as I truly enjoy teaching them and helping them to understand and complete the assigned work. Developing ways to meet each boys needs in order to help them grasp concepts is amazing, as they are completely alike in every way except for the way they learn. As a pre-service teacher I have come to learn how to teach them in a way that will benefit them and in various ways and still creates a challenge in which I am continuously learning about myself, a forever learner. I pride myself on being the best I can be and have worked hard to get where I am. In my opinion the educational, emotional and even physical struggles I have overcome in the past will

help me relate to some of my students who are having all different types of difficulties. I consider myself to be ambitious, self-motivated and very driven to succeed at anything that life throws my way. I see this as an asset in a teacher, as I will always try my best to bring out the best in every student I meet. I believe the high standards that I hold myself to will be reflected in the expectations I have of my students. This this meaning, I hope to encourage them to achieve their personal best, whether it be in the classroom, in their communities or in any other extracurricular activities. The compassion I learned as a small child has transferred over to every aspect of my life, and it has helped me form meaningful and lasting relationships. With that in mind, I will use these skills to my advantage with my students in order to be sensitive to their needs and wants within the classroom. With all of these experiences and personal attributes, I see myself priding daily efforts to become the best teacher I can be for my students. I want them to achieve their goals and want to be there to help foster them in any way possible. I was the "underdog" student that teachers never really paid attention to, nor thought anything of, and now I feel that it is my personal duty to make sure that no student in my class ever feels the way I did. I will always keep an eye out for the children that other teachers have branded as troublesome or not good enough because I personally know, anyone can achieve anything if they put their minds to it and work hard.
