Sri Rahayu Zees A Lecturer at the Accounting Department of the State Polytechnic of Semarang Abstract: The research was aimed at evaluating the ability of the accounting students of Politeknik Negeri Semarang in choosing the appropriate language in performing communicative functions in oral communication. The theory used for analysis is cooperative principle which proposes four maxims: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. 25 sixth-semester students were chosen to be the objects of the research and 20 language functions were used as tools for measuring the communicative competences. The results of the analysis show that 10% or 2 functions were performed well by all respondents according to the maxims. On the other hand, 90% or 18 functions were not performed well because they did not match with the maxims. The highest percentage in flouting the maxim is on the function which probably had not used in authentic conversation; zero percentage is on functions that seem to have been used in their daily conversation and a considerable percentage of flouting maxims is on other functions which have seldom been used. Keywords: cooperative principles, maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, maxim of manner
