Minimum Age Standards for Agricultural Employment:

Information on Hour Limits and on Wage Earnings:

Youth ages 16 and above may work on a farm at any time. Youth ages 14 and 15 may work on a farm not during school hours and not working hazardous jobs Youth ages 12 and 13 may work on a farm not during school hours, not working hazardous jobs, and must have parents written consent. Youths of any age may work at any time in any job on a farm owned or operated by their parents NOTE: Check United States Department of Labor to find out what hazardous jobs youth under 16 years old CANT work.

General Information To Remember While Working:

Minors can work an unlimited amount of hours outside of school hours some may need parental consent if they are 13 years old or younger. Children are required to be paid at least minimum wage except for the children who work in the field picking harvest crops this is often children around the age of 10 and 11 years old.. When children work WITH their parents sometimes they are not paid at all. Keep in mind growers often pay farm workers piece wages. This benefits workers who are strong and quick only. The slower minor workers can make as little as $2 or $3 an hour.

Though rules and regulations are very different from other jobs you still have rights no matter what your age is! Make sure you are trained accurately on any job that requires safety training. Report any unsafe conditions you may be forced to work in to a supervisor or even a parent. It is your employers responsibility to give you all the proper information to perform any job safely and correctly and you should report if they do not meet this requirement. Dont be afraid to ask questions.
