LESSON PLAN

Havilah Jones GENERAL INFORMATION Lesson Title & Subject(s): Fractions on a Number Line Math Topic or Unit of Study: Fractions Grade/Level: 3rd Grade Instructional Setting:
The lesson will be taught in a third grade classroom with 27 Students. Desks are arranged in 5 groups of 5-6 desks in each group. The classroom has a whiteboard at the front of the room and a projector.

STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES Your State Core Curriculum/Student Achievement Standard(s):

Number and Operations Fractions: 1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. Number and Operations Fractions: 2 Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram. Number and Operations Fractions: 2a Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line. Number and Operations Fractions: 2b Represent a fraction a/b on a number line diagram by marking off a lengths 1/b from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size a/b and that its endpoint locates the number a/b on the number line.

Lesson Goals:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to plot points representing fractions on a number line.

Lesson Objective(s):
Given a worksheet with number lines, students will be able to plot points that represent fractions on the number lines with 75% accuracy.

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES Instructional Materials:

Yarn for each student (10.5) Pizza Number Line Worksheet Independent Practice Worksheet Homework Worksheet

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events: 1. Identification of Student Prerequisite Skills Needed for Lesson (5 min):
Students will be familiar with dividing shapes into equal groups and labeling unit fractions. Students will be familiar with using fractions to name parts of a whole. Quickly review what a fraction is. Review the definitions of the numerator and the denominator. Ask students to go up to the board and write different fractions in different ways (as a fraction, as a picture, etc.) Hand out Pizza Worksheet, yarn and markers while doing this.

2. Presentation of New Information or Modeling (5-10 min):

Begin by reminding the students about when we talked about the pizza. Draw a circle on the board. If we cut the pizza one time, how many pieces do we have? (2) What fraction represents one of the pieces? (1/2) What if we cut it another time? How many pieces do we have now? (4) What fraction represents one of the pieces? (1/4) Continue until we have 8 pieces. Today, we are going to be learning about what pizza and number lines have in common. Explain that we will be using our yarn and our markers to learn about number lines. Explain to the students that I will be giving a lot of instructions so they need to make sure they are listening for those instructions.

3. Guided Practice (15-20 min):

Project my worksheet and yarn onto the board using the Elmo Projector. Ask the students to take their piece of yarn and wrap it around the circumference of the pizza. Make sure they place the ends of the yarn at the top of the circle each time they wrap it around. Tell the students that this yarn represents the whole number 1. Have them stretch the yarn out straight and mark a number line on their paper. Show them how to add arrows to each side of the number line and a 0 and 1. Wrap the string around again. Using the first marker, cut the pizza in half and mark the yarn (show the students first, then have them do it on their own paper). Have students stretch their yarn out again to mark on the number line. Wrap the string around again. Ask students to trade markers with someone at their table so they have a new color. Cut the pizza again and mark the string. Stretch it out again and mark the number line. Repeat one more time. Have students open their books to page 597. Complete number 4 together. Talk about how we know what fraction to use. (Count the number of sections the number line is divided into in order to determine the denominator) Answer any questions the students have.

4. Independent Student Practice (20 min):

Ask students to complete pages 597 and 598 in the MyMath book on their own. Walk around, observe and help any students that need it.

5. Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity/Event (5 min):

Ask the students to explain how we use number lines to represent fractions. Review any concepts that students seemed to have a hard time understanding. Assign homework page 599.

Pedagogical Strategy (or Strategies):

Direct instruction, independent work

Differentiated Instruction:
Students who struggle with math will be seated near the front of the classroom. I will make sure to assist them during the independent practice portion of the lesson. Student with ADHD will also be seated near the front of the classroom. I will keep an eye on her and give her specific instructions and reminders when necessary. If she is having a hard time focusing on the assignment, she will be able to roll a dice and complete the number of problems that show up on the dice roll.

Student Assessment/Rubrics:
Informal assessment: I will assess the students as they are participating in the lesson. I will listen to their answers and identify those students that seem to have trouble understanding the concepts. I will observe the students as they complete their in-class independent worksheet. Formal assessment: Students will be formally assessed by completing their homework assignment. Students will meet the objective if they receive a score of 75% or more.
