1. STUDENT LEARNING NEEDS There are no specific learning needs that will impact this lesson other than the attention span of a few of the students. PRIOR LEARNING Students are accustomed to writing in school. They have a good grasp on the concept of print and can write complete sentences. In previous writing lessons students have had to respond to a prompt by describing something. Students can orally describe objects to students without a problem. Some students may struggle to write more than a few sentences regarding the lesson topic. Some students may make grammatical errors if they rush their writing. SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Students of this age group are eager to show off their skills to the teacher and to their peers. They also get excited about voicing their own opinions, which they will be able to do through this writing prompt. ACADEMIC LANGUAGE Senses

COMMON CORE STANDARDS or STATE STANDARDS Common Core Writing Standards K-5 Second Grade: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. 3. E.A.T.S FORMAT ESSENTIAL QUESTION How can we describe something through writing? ACTIVATING STRATEGY Call tables to get writing journals.

Who loves chocolate chip cookies? Discuss why the students love chocolate chip cookies. Record reasons on board in a organized fashion (graphic organizer) TEACHING STRATEGIES Lets pretend that we just met someone who has never had a chocolate chip cookie before. How would you describe the cookie to them? What describing words would you use? Lets make a list of describing words that we could use to describe a chocolate chip cookie. Now lets turn those describing words into describing sentences. Write 5 sentences about a chocolate chip cookie. Summarizing Strategies (Closure) Have student volunteers read what they wrote to the class. Peer feedback 5. RESOURCES AND MATERIALS Chocolate Chip Cookies Writing journals (for each student) 6. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT/DEMOCRATIC PRACTICES 1-2-3 Magic Star Tables Students may not call out. Encourage them to use quiet hands. If they do not, issue warnings for the 1-2-3 Magic yard stick. Use positive reinforcement and school-wide PBS to encourage appropriate behavior. Use wait time and rephrasing to allow all students to participate in the lesson.
