Grade 7 Percentages Study Guide Name: _________________

1. Converting between Percents – Decimals - Fractions

• % to Decimal …………………………. ÷ 100
• Decimal to % …………………………. X 100
• Percent to Fraction………………..place over 100, then simplify
• Fraction to Percent………………..numerator ÷ denominator x 100
• Decimal to Fraction………………..Move decimal to right, place number
above a factor of 10
• Fraction to Decimal……………….. numerator ÷ denominator

2. Calculating Percents to make comparisons

• To determine whether a quantity is less/more or equal to another, must change to a
percent.

i.e. I received 34/45 on my first Math test. Then I got 44/55 on my second test.
Which test did I receive the higher percentage? Round your answer to the nearest
whole percent.

34/45 = .755 x 100 = 76% 44/55 = 0.80 x 100 = 80%

I achieved the higher score on the second test.

3. Finding Percent of a Number

i.e. 23% of 48

Step 1: Change your percent to a decimal by ÷ 100 23/100 = .23

Step 2: of = x (multiplication)
Step 3: decimal x number .23 x 48 = 11.04

4. Estimating with Percents

i.e. What is 37% of 139

Step 1: Round your number to a more manageable number 139 140

Step 2: Determine 10% of the new number 10% of 140 = 14

Step 3: Multiply or divide by the appropriate factor to determine the closest value to the
percentage. Then ESTIMATE.

Since 10% = 14…if multiply by 4 this would give me 40% and 14 x 4 = 56

Since 37% is less than 40% I would ESTIMATE 37% to be equal to 53.
5. Finding the Sale price of an item ( DO NOT ROUND YOUR PRICE)

i.e. If the regular price of a pair of shoes is $29.99, what is the sale price if they are
reduced by 20%?

Step 1: Change your % to a decimal by ÷ 100 20/100 = 0.20

Step 2: Decimal x regular price = discount .20 x $29.99 = $5.998
Since money only is represented by 2 decimal places = $6.00
Step 3: Regular price – discount = sale price $29.99 – $6.00 = $23.99

6. Calculating TAX or TIP

• Same process as finding sale price but your must ADD & not SUBTRACT

i.e. If I want to leave 7% tip on my food bill that equals $15.67, how much do I leave?

Step 1: % to decimal 7/100= 0.07

Step 2: Price x decimal $15.67 x 0.07 = $1.0969 = $1.10
Step 3: Price + tip $15.57 + $1.10 = $16.67

• REMEMBER TO SHOW ALL OF YOUR WORK DURING THE

TEST!

• DON’T FORGET TO USE $ WHEN SOLVING QUESTIONS

WITH MONEY

• ROUND YOUR ANSWERS WHERE APPROPRIATE!

• DON’T FORGET YOUR CALCULATOR!
