Hey Good Looking
Read the following text and see if you can guess the underlined words from
context. Remember the questions that can help you do this:

Does the word appear to have either a positive or negative
connotation?
Does the word (or part of the word) look like any other words you
already know?
Do the words (or sentences) surrounding the underlined word help
you to guess the meaning.

Its an old question but still an interesting one I think; do men and women fall
in love for different reasons? Many women say that men are just shallow and
only fall in love with superficial things like the way a woman looks without
bothering to find our about their underlying character. Men of course deny this
and most will claim that depth of personality is far more important than mere
surface attraction when it comes to falling in love.
Women, on the other hand, are said to be seeking a sense of security when
searching for their soul-mate. People also say that women are more likely to
fall for a mans voice than his looks. Maybe what women are really after is a
sense that the man is prepared to commit himself to a relationship rather that
just looking for a short period of light-hearted amusement!

Discussion
1. Do you think the above passage was written by a man or a woman or
is it impossible to tell?

2. Do you think that romantic love can last forever or do you think
that after a (short?) time the best we can hope for is a feeling of
friendship based on mutual respect?

3. What is the secret of choosing a good life-partner?

4. Do you think people are ever too young or too old to fall in love?

5. Does being rich mean people are more or less likely to fall in love
with you?

6. Try to put these factors in order of importance when choosing
someone to fall in love with:

Good looks
Money
Similar sense of humor
Honesty
Similar interests
Willingness to commit to the relationship

7. Have you ever fallen in love with someone based solely on their good
looks? (Be honest!)
