Nicola Shanks 11/5/13 Science 4 PRACTICE PHOTOSYNTHESIS LAB ANALYSIS DATA FOR ALL CLASSES Oxygen Produced in 3 Minutes

PERIOD 1 2 3 4 6 7 Total /6 10 cm 41.8 20.8 9.5 51.5 27.2 19.2 170/6=28.3 20 cm 30.2 44 8.3 26.3 18.8 29.6 157.2/6=26.2 % Increase or Decrease 27.7% decrease 52.7% increase 12.6% decrease 48.9% decrease 30.8% decrease 67.5% increase 7.5% decrease

Calculate the % decrease or increase for each class period. Example for 7th grade results: Find the difference: 28.3-26.2= = 2.1 Divide the difference by original: 2.1/28.3 = .074 Multiply by 100: 0.074 x 100 = 7.4% decrease in Oxygen when Intensity decreased. Notes: Periods 1,2,3, 7 started the experiment at 20 cm and then moved the lamp to 10 cm. Periods 4 and 6 started the experiment at 10 cm and moved the lamp to 20 cm. 1. Explain the inconsistency in the data. Please show your thinking. Some of the data is inconsistent because some people counted bubbles differently and they may have said the size of the bubble was small when it was really medium, etc. 2. Explain how you would make changes in the experiment to increase the reliability. I would do a test before and show everyone what a small, medium, and large bubble look like. I also wouldnt have had periods 1,2,3, and 7 start the lamp at 20cm and then move it to 10cm while the other classes started at 10cm and then moved to 20cm, because you would want to keep the experiments as close together as possible.

3. Based on your answer to #2, write a step- by- step procedure to show the experimental design. In other words, how would you change the experiment to make it more reliable? 1. Cut elodea at an angle to 7 cm 2. Tear a few leaves off the end and lightly crush end of stem lightly. 3. Place elodea in a test tube filled with water so that it covers the stem. 4. Measure lamp at 10cm away from the test tube. 5. Wait one minute and then set a timer for 1 minute and start it when you turn on the lamp. 6. Count the bubbles that come out of the stem and put them into groups of small, medium, and large. 7. To calculate the amount of bubbles, multiply the amount of small bubble by 1, multiply the medium bubbles by 2 and multiply the large bubbles by 3. Add them all up.
