COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Between my family life and Spain By Emily Goriss

ETIQUETTE AT THE TABLE

Differences In Spain, whether you are eating out or in the comfort of your own home there are rules. Like in America, its frowned upon to put your elbows on the table, but in Spain people are more strict about it. When eating dinner in spain you use a bigger spoon if you have something like soup and for dessert people use something the size of a teaspoon. During dinner at my house a moment of silence is ok, but in Spain you need to keep talking. If there is silence its said That an angel has just past over the table.

GROCERIES
Similarities + Differences
Spain has super markets for dry and canned foods, kinda like Hannaford. Unlike the stores my family goes to, shops in Spain carry less processed food. They also have a lot more fresh, local foods in places like farmers markets.

MEAL TIMES DURING A DAY IN SPAIN

Differences
Breakfast is around 8:00 a.m. Unlike breakfast at my house, in Spain its the smallest meal of the day. Then at 11:00ish people in Spain have a second breakfast which usually is just a snack until lunch. They have snacks because lunch is a lot later there than it is here. It starts at about 2 p.m. and can sometimes go till 4 p.m. A later lunch means a later dinner. Many people will eat dinner at 9 or even later. If your still to full from lunch instead of a whole dinner people have a variety of Tapas. Tapas are the size of an appetizer. (see page 4)

TAPAS
Tapas are very similar to appetizers that my family likes to get at restaurants They can be cold such as olives and cheese, or hot like chopitos, which are battered, fried baby squids. In Spain, you can order many different tapas and combine them to make a full meal. The serving tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people arent so focused on eating an entire meal that is put in front of them. Tapas are eaten throughout the day as snacks.
