MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The reason for my hypothesis is that vinegar is 95% water and 4 5% acetic acid. The acetic acid would create a chemical reaction with calcium carbonate and dissolve the eggshell, and make the selectively permeable membrane and the water from the vinegar to go from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration across the selectable permeable membrane, witch would cause the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 325 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles collecting on the eggshell. Liquid level displaced 75 ml. the egg is not floating. There are more bubbles on the egg and the eggshell is almost completely dissolved. The texture of the egg is almost rubbery but manly chalky. no shell less bubbles see through the vinegar was weaker

CONCLUSION In this lab we were testing if the water molecule in vinegar would diffuse from an area of high concentration to a low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane witch is also known as osmosis. My groups egg expanded 2.5cm and the expansion of the entire 7th grade was 2.7cm, my groups egg expanded 0.2 cm less then the entire seventh grade. My hypothesis was that water would flow into the egg My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS What caused the eggshell to dissolve was a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction happened when the eggshell was dropped into the vinegar. The nucleic acid in the vinegar touched the calcium carbonate it caused there to form bubbles, when bubbles form that means that there is a chemical reaction happening. The difference between group 3s egg witch was 4.5 and group 7s egg witch was 1.1, the expansion is 3.4. the rate at witch the egg expanded in 4 days was The reason why the groups got different results is the egg that group 3 got might have been bigger then group 7s egg. Or group 7s egg could have a higher concentration in side the egg then outside of the egg witch would cause the water from inside of the egg to go out side of the egg there for causing the egg to shrink. Cells need

nutrients to function that are in water, and water keeps the cell in form because we are about 76% water.p
