The Nile Valley Day 2 Subject: Ancient History Topic: The Nile Valley

Lesson Summary: The students will finish their Nile Valley map and paste it into their social studies journals. Then the students will explore a current map view of the Nile Valley using google maps.

Lesson Objectives: The Nile Valley The students will locate and describe the location and geography of the Nile River (map activity) The students will explain how geography affected the political, economic and religious structures of the civilization of Egypt. (map activity continued)

Standards: HSS 6.2 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Kush. Standard 1: Locate and describe the major river systems and discuss the physical settings that supported permanent settlement and early civilizations CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.7 Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts. Craft and Structure CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.5 Describe how a text presents information (e.g., sequentially, comparatively, causally). Model: will model how to access google maps using the smartboard. I will show the students how they can see the geographic details and modern cities in Egypt that surround the Nile Valley. The Nile River Google maps Guided Practice: The students will work with their table partners to access modern day Nile Valley through google maps. With their partners, students will discuss how ancient Egypt compares to modern day Egypt. Are the geographic features the same or different? Also how is life for the Egyptians the same or different in the Nile Valley? If the same or different how so?

Independent Practice: The students will locate a particular city in Egypt surrounding the Nile Valley. The students will answer the following questions in their social studies journals: Are the geographic features the same or different? Also how is life for the Egyptians the same or different in the Valley? If the same or different how so? Students will draw and color a past and present day map of the Nile Valley.
