Dr Carmen W. van den Berg, IMEM, CU. vandenbergcw@cardiff.ac.uk Polleverywhere is an application which can be used for live audience participation. The audience can use devices including mobile phones, tablets and laptops to participate in polls. The presenter can present the polls embedded in powerpoint or directly from the web. Polleverywhere was used in a variety of settings, with the aims of increasing student participation or assessing students’ knowledge. The session sizes varied from 13-75 students (year 1 C21 and year 3 BSc Med. Pharmacology and Intercalated students. It was anticipated that as Polleverywhere is anonymous, more students may respond to open ended questions. A variety of types of questions was used including open questions, MCQs and ‘ask the experts’ questions. In the ‘ask the experts’ setting, the participants could ask, the questions and participants could send in their questions during the duration of the session. Questions were selected using an iPad and then projected onto the wall. For student participation MCQ type questions were most successful and response rates were high, while open ended questions were least successful as response times were too slow. The ‘ask the expert’ questions sessions were successful as response time was not an issue and questions came in over the duration of the session. Usability of Polleverywhere was impaired by poor/intermittent/no Wifi signal at several lecture venues and seminar rooms at the Heath campus. Conclusion: Polleverywhere is a useful tool to quickly test the students’ knowledge but should be used e.g. at the beginning or end of a teaching session as MCQ style poll. It is also a useful tool to use in an ‘ask the expert session’ as the questions can be selected, grouped and projected. It is not very suitable for open question types polls. For Polleverywhere to be successful a good stable Wifi signal is required.
