CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE AND EQUITY IN MATHEMATICS

March 3, 2014

Vanesa Escobar is a truly outstanding individual. She is bright, has a strong character and an obvious desire to excel in her academics. These are qualities that have not only brought her success in her own life, but constantly push her to help others.

Needless to say, Vanesa is a very bright and motivated individual. I first came to know Vanesa in my capacity as her Math Instructor for MAT 0900 in the Rising Scholars Program (RSP) in Fall 2013. RSP is an extremely demanding and rigorous program in which students are required to make a substantial commitment to mastering Mathematics. Students spend seven hours per week in the classroom, including three hours in a challenging problem solving workshop, centered on group work. Students must keep a written journal of problems solved. Vanesa displayed enthusiasm, determination, discipline, hard work, and dedication to her studies. Vanesa not only stood out in lecture answering and asking great questions, but she excelled in workshop as well. She was never afraid to ask questions in class or seek help outside of the classroom. She worked rigorously in the workshop while supporting and contributing ideas to her classmates. Students in RSP must be highly motivated, and committed to excellence. Vanesa is clearly such a student, as she earned a B in MAT 0900. She does not settle for mediocrity and demands the same mentality and effort from her peers. I have never seen someone put that amount of effort in fully understanding the mathematical concepts and think critically about each problem. Her work ethic and discipline are unparalleled. She was an absolute joy and positive force in the class. Vanesas tremendous enthusiasm for learning and achievement has been unmistakable throughout her semesters at Wayne State. The care that she put into her academics also shined through with her classmates. She is a kind, compassionate, dedicated, selfless person who finds joy in helping others even when she is struggling. These many qualities, personally, academically, and professionally will make her a great participant in your program. The attitude and determination of doing well no matter what has shown throughout her undergraduate career that Vanesa is truly prepared to work against the rigors and challenges of Wayne State and any university she attends. It is a genuine pleasure for me to recommend Vanesa Escobar to be a part of your graduate program.

Sincerely, Samantha Flores Math Instructor Rising Scholars Program WSU CEEM
