This was a 4th grade gifted cluster language arts lesson. The transition was made from the previous lesson by having students clear their desks. Positive reinforcement was given for those who did so quickly and quietly. Ms. Aubrey did not start the lesson until all eyes were on her. She Showed the class a graphic organizer on the Promethean Board. Students were asked what purpose it served and where they had seen it before. Ms. Aubrey wrote the students' ideas on the board. The student teacher then introduced the topic of the day which was main idea and details. She showed a powerpoint slide with a key graphic to list the key words for the topic of main idea. She then went on to show a slide about supporting idea. She used the idea of a sandwich. The ham, cheese and lettuce are the details of the sandwich. A passage was projected on the board and students were asked to find the main idea. Students were called on randomly according to a preassigned number for each student. Students were asked to do thumbs up if

they agreed a student's answer for the main idea. One student gave the wrong answer but another student didn't agree and corrected the initial answer. Ms. Aubrey used quetioning techniques to get the correct answer. She reviewed topic sentence to help students come up with the correct answer. Students located their shoulder partner and were asked to put sentence strips in order according to main idea and details.Students returned to the whole group and discussed which sentences were details and which sentence was the main idea. Different groups had different passage. When one group was discussing their passage, the other group was asked if the other group had the correct information. Ms. Aubrey gave the groups one minute to get materials put back together. The activity was repeated but students worked independently. Students were given 3 minutes for this task. Commendations:1) Ms. Aubrey did not start teaching until she had everyone's attention 2) There was a good differentiation of the activity-the two different groups had different passages to locate the main idea and details 3) Ms. Aubrey had time limits on the activities and cleaning up 4) There was good monitoring of the whole class concerning individual behavior Recommendations: 1) While you used the great technique of trying to call on all students, I would draw names from a container 2) When students get restless, stop the activity until they settle down 3) Give more positive feedback to students 4) Remind the students of behavioral expectations before the activity begins.
