This essay discuses the factors that may influence the equality of opportunity for individuals. Discrimination means when a person is not treated fairly, this normally occurs in these categories of race and gender.

Discrimination can affect physical health and well-being. This is seen in; having a lack of sleep, high blood pressure, ulcers, and heart disease. Additionally, headaches may occurs as well as a result of the person thinking too much of them self's that may not make them equal as others. This includes: there sexuality , gender, race, ethnicity and religion. Discrimination can lead to the loss of the person's appetite due to depression. Some people may harm themselves to get rid of distress. This may lead to them committing suicide.

As well as discrimination affecting your physical health, it can also affect your intellectual health is well. Discrimination can cause the intellectual health to have anxiety and depression. This may lead to the person to be distracted , lose concentration and lose a interest in the things they liked. Discrimination has a effect of not feeling safe around others or even living in fears of others. This also causes low self of esteem within a person's abilities.

The act of discrimination can affect the emotional health by causing the person to feel nervous. Discrimination goes against who you are, this can lead to the person feeling worthless, this may have trigger to depression and may cause you emotionally not being well. This may have an result of the person committing suicide, if not given therapy at the right time.

A social effect of discrimination is the person not wanting to be with others. As the person may feel a lose of their identity and not wanted because people are going against of who they are. This can lead to 'social isolation'

lastly, the biggest effect of discrimination is depression. Depression is a complex medical condition which can include physical symptoms such as slower movement or speech. Also a change in appetite, and weight increases or decreases due to what the person's feelings are. Socially the person changes how they interact with the person or distant with people from themselves . Psychologically, the person may feel tearful, guilty and intolerant of others. Also suicidal thoughts may occur to or the thoughts of harming others possibly the people who

discriminate them the most. The feelings of them being worthless and hopelessness may also occur. There are four types of discrimination and these are unfair discrimination, direct discrimination, indirect discrimination and positive discrimination, unfair discrimination is someone is being compared to someone else and not being treated fairly based on their race, age, and gender. This may influence the opportunity of being equal, as the person may feel discriminated against their race, age and gender. Direct discrimination is someone not being treated fairly or when someone is disliked due to their appearance. This influence the person not being equal, as the person feels they dont fit on society because of their appearance. Indirect discrimination is when an individual is excluded from a group because of the certain rules that are set that does not meet the individual. This makes the person feel downhearted, because the person is not being treated equal due to the set of rules that have been given. Positive discrimination is when a agreement is made favouring the person for the reason that they are different. This influence the equality of opportunity for individuals as the person may feel that them being different its right and the equal of rights are not being discriminated. stereotyping is another factor that may influence the equality of opportunity, stereotyping is when you view someone in a simple or basic manner. For example, today in society Muslims are viewed as 'terrorist' because of one individual of a terrorist act, this news travelled through the media, and now the Muslim race is stereotypically seen as 'terrorist'. such as this example, stereotyping can influence the opportunity of equality by the person being viewed as someone who is not them but being labelled in a web of perspective thoughts, this may leave the individual thinking they don't fit in society, when they actually do. The word prejudice means to be unfair to someone. A example in a health and social care setting would be a nurse being unfair to her patient because of her age. This may influence the equality of opportunity for individuals because the individuals may feel insecure about their age. Another factor that influences the equality of opportunity for individuals is age. People get stereotyped by age in society all the time. For example; teenagers are stereotyped as being rowdy and mean to old age, as the true fact is there not like that, if a teenager is seen in a hoodie there stereotyped a serial killer or a drug dealer. why does a piece of clothing define who you are? old age is stereotyped as being moony and grumpy all the time, where again that's not true as some old age are seen as jolly. This influences the equality of opportunity for individuals as the person feel discriminated by their age and feels insecure. Also they may feel not part of the society. Religion also influences the equality of opportunity for individuals. For example; Muslims are stereotyped as 'terriost' specially women's and young girls who wear a hijab. This form of discrimination influences the equality of opportunity for individuals as they feel discriminated of what religion they are and don't feel equal. Disability is another factor that also influences the opportunity of equal opportunity.Many

people think disabled people are not equal, as most of disabled people are in wheelchairs as this means there unable to walk. This influences the equality of opportunity for individuals, this makes them feel not welcomed and not accepted of who they are. Language is another factor that influences equality. This is because many people speak different languages. A example in health and social care is a doctor trying to speak English to a Spanish language spoken person, as the doctor may discriminate his/her language. This may make the individual feel ashamed of their 'home spoken language', and not feel equal in that environment. The role of media plays a huge part of influencing equality of opportunity, as well as the media delivers news rapidly around the world, it also has influence on us as people of how we view things. Even though books gives us the pleasure of reading, it also gives the author's opinion and this changes our view of how we view people.This then ,influences of how we view people then.
