Guided Reading Lesson Plan Template You will create a guided reading lesson plan appropriate for students

in second through fifth grade. Begin by choosing the level of reader (transitional, self-extending, or advanced). Consider the characteristics of those readers when planning your lesson. (1) Description of Reading Group Include the grade level (2nd through 5th) as well as the reading level (transitional, self-extending, or advanced). The reading group will consist of 3 second graders. They are all on a second grade reading level. They are on the transitional guided reading level.

(2) Quality literature- Include the title, author, genre, a short summary in your own words, and the readability of the text. For this guided reading lesson, I am going to use a book from Fountas-Pinnell Level M. The text is Americas First Firefighters by Lena Crawford. This is an informational text that discusses how things have changed in firefighting a lot since 1700, such as the difference between the new equipment and methods that are used today. (3) Lesson focus Describe the strategy/skill that you are targeting. In this guided reading lesson I am focusing on comparing and contrasting two things in one particular text. I want the students in my group to be able to recall information about firefighters in 1700 and compare it to firefighters today.

(4) Formative assessment- Describe how you will assess students during the guided reading lesson. What behaviors will indicate that your students get it? What behaviors might indicate that they need further instruction? While I am reading the text aloud, I am going to make sure the students are following along and keeping up by randomly stopping and having them read a paragraph aloud. This will also help me assess fluency and word recognition. After I have read the passage aloud, I will ask the students some facts they learned about firefighters in 1700. If they have a hard time recalling the information as a group we will go back and reread some things to see if that helps with their comprehension. When we have finished discussing that, we will then discuss what is different about firefighters in 1700 compared to firefighters today. After we have discussed what is different, we will then discuss what similarities about the two are. I will have them fill out a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting fighters in the 1700s to firefighters today after having a discussion on all of the above.

Suggested Teaching Points

Activate/Provide background Help students make connections Share thinking Make predictions New vocabulary Draw attention to text features Hear and say new lang. structures Reveal structure of the text /genre Writers craft to support analysis Authors accuracy or authenticity of text Demonstrate, prompt for, or reinforce the effective use of processing strategies word solving, searching for and using information, maintaining fluency, detecting and correcting errors, summarizing, and adjusting reading. Prompt for fluency and phrasing. Gather evidence of comprehension by observing what students say about the text. Invite students to pose questions and clarify their understanding. Help students learn to discuss the meaning of the text together. Extend students expression of understandings through questioning, summarizing, restating, and adding to their comments.

Reading the Text

Introduce the text by asking if anyone has been to a fire station before and taken a tour? If there is a yes, ask what the student seen and liked if there is a no then ask what they think would be in a fire station and what they think a fire station would be like. After discussion ask a student to read the title and author and then discuss the cover illustration. Inform students that this book is an informational text. Tell students that after reading the text they are going to compare and contrast what they learn about firefighters then and what firefighters have now using a Venn diagram. (ask students if everyone knows how to use a Venn diagram) Inform students that by comparing and contrasting text they tell how two things are alike and how they are different. Before reading, take a book walk and point out the highlighted words and what they mean in the text. I will read the story aloud to the children as they use their finger to follow along. Sometimes I will ask them to read aloud certain paragraphs to make sure they are keeping up with where I am reading.

Introduction

Discussing

Within Ask students if there are any questions about the book? Ask what happened in the story? Ask what are some things they learned about the lives of firefighters that lived in the 1700? What were some important facts bout firefighters in this book? Solving Words Monitoring and checking Search for/ use information Summarizing Maintaining fluency Adjusting Reading

Beyond Tell me some ways firefighters in 1700 are alike and different from firefighters today. Make a prediction about some inventions that could be made about firefighters in the future? What is a question you still have about firefighters?

About Ask about the highlighted words again and ask if they can tell me what the word means? What was the writers message?

Teaching for Processing Strategies

Revisit the text to demonstrate, reinforce, or provide explicit instruction of strategic actions.

Predicting Making connections Synthesizing Inferring

Analyzing Critiquing

Extend

Use writing, drawing, or extended talk to explore any aspect of understanding the text.

Pass out Venn diagram hand out and have the students fill it in by comparing and contrasting firefighters in 1700 and firefighters today. If students are struggling do one for each bubble to get the group started.
