Graphs of Linear Equations Reading Graphs

What you should know: The consistent and even spacing on a number line is called the scale of the number line. Often, data is presented visually in a bar chart, a line graph, or in a scatter plot. The input values are plotted on the horizontal, or x! axis. The output values are plotted on the vertical, or y!axis. To determine the scale of an axis, look at the data or the points and nd the smallest and largest values that need to be plotted on that axis. Make sure that the scale you select will include both the smallest and largest values. We often scale by numbers such as 1, 2, 5, or 10 because it is easy to count by these numbers. We usually scale the axes so that between 10 and 20 values appears on one axis. In a bar graph, the input (x) values are plotted on the horizontal axis spaced an even distance apart. The output (y) values are represented by the height of each bar. The vertical axis is will be scaled to represent the heights of the bars. In a line graph, we do not use bars to represent the heights. We draw a dot for each height, and then connect the dots with a line. A point is written in the form (x, y). The input value, or x, is always written rst, reading left to right. The output value, or y, is always written second (reading left to right). For example, in the pair (2, 3) we have that x=2 and y=3. Another way to remember this is that the pair is given in alphabetical order, reading left to right. Points of the form (x, y) are also called ordered pairs or coordinates. The word order refers to the fact that the order matters in the pair. The point (2, 3) is NOT the same as (3, 2). A linear equation in two variables has the form Ax + By = C. This equation graphs as a straight line. A solution to a linear equation in two variables is an ordered pair (x, y). When both values of x and y are substituted in the equation, both sides of the equation are equal (the equation is true). For example, the point (2, 3) is a solution of the equation -3x + 2y = 0 . To see this, we substitute the point (2, 3) into the equation and simplify both sides.
! ! ! -3x + 2y = 0 Let x = 2 and y = 3. -3(2) + 2(3) = 0 0=0

Sometimes ordered pairs are written in a table. The points (2, 3), (!3, 5), and (6, !1) are written in the table below. " x |y " 2 |3 " !3 | 5 " 6 | !1 We graph points on the xy!plane, which is called the Cartesian coordinate system.

Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables

What you should know: To nd a solution to a linear equation in two variables, substitute the given value of the variable into the equation. Then solve for the other variable. Write the solution as a point, or an ordered pair, (x, y). Linear equations in two variables graph as straight lines. One way to graph a linear equation is to create a table of values (ordered pairs), graph the points and then connect them with a straight line. To graph a linear equation, graph at least 3 points. Ask your instructor if they want you to graph more. The x!intercept is the point where the line crosses the x!axis. To nd the x!intercept, substitute y = 0 into the equation and solve for x. Write the point as (x, 0) . The y!intercept is the point where the line crosses the y!axis. To nd the y!intercept, substitute x = 0 into the equation and solve for y. Write the point as (0, y) . A linear equation in two variables can also be graphed by nding and plotting the intercepts, then connecting the points with a straight line. A line that passes through the origin, the point (0, 0), has the same x! and y!intercepts. If a line goes through the origin, you will need to nd and graph one more point than (0, 0). An equation of the form x = k , where k is any real number, graphs as a vertical line. An equation of the form y = b where b is any real number, graphs as a horizontal line.

MATH JOURNAL PROMPTS

1. Megan challenged Amanda to nd the larger quantity without using a calculator or computing it with paper and pencil. Which is larger: 69 or 96? How do you know? 69 is the larger amount. Students may have various ways of determining which one is larger.

2. Courtney said she could use the distributive property of multiplication over addition to help her multiply mixed numbers. Here is what she wrote: 3 2/3 x 4 1/2 = (3 x 4) + (2/3 x 1/2) = 12 + 1/3 = 121/3 Is her method correct? Why or why not? Her method is not correct. She did not apply the distributive property appropriately. Thus her product is too small.

3. Myrna says all numbers have reciprocals. Nicky disagrees. Who is right? Why do you think so? Not all numbers have reciprocals. Nicky is correct. Zero does not have a reciprocal.

4. Jensen said, The square root of a number is always smaller than the radicand. What do you think? Why? This is not true. As one counterexample, the square root of one-fourth is one-half. One-half is greater than one-fourth.

5. Kevala noticed that 7/ sqrt(7) is equal to sqrt(70. How can you explain this? The original fraction was multiplied by sqrt(7) / sqrt(7) or 1 to obtain the radical.

6. Chester wrote sqrt(25) = 5. Lester wrote that sqrt(25) is impossible. Who is right? Why? Chester is incorrect because 5 raised to the second power would be 25.Lester is correct if imaginary numbers cannot be used.
