Facts on Bullying
An estimated 160,000 students miss school every day due to a fear of bullying or harassment.

Bullying causes fear and creates a climate of disrespect in schools. It has a negative impact on student learning.
The National Threat Assessment Center found that the attackers in more than two thirds of 37 mass school shootings felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attached, or injured by others. Bullying takes place most often at school and where there is no or little adult supervision.

What can I do to help?

Combat bullying by using these 6 steps towards success:
M-Mission E-Elements A-Analyze S U-Stakeholders Unite R-Reanalyze E-Educate
Dahir, C. A. & Stone, C. B. (2003). Article 57 MEASURE-ing Student Success: School Counselor Accountability.

Mission
Our mission at Kaufman High School, with parents and community, will facilitate an optimal learning environment for all students that will enable them to lead successful and productive lives in this ever-changing society. Bullying is NOT part of an optimal learning environment!

Elements
All students can be a victim of bullying. Counselors will develop a survey where students can identify the types of bullying that are occurring at Kaufman High School. Online surveys can be made for free at SurveyMonkey.com or kwiksurveys.com
Sample survey obtained from http://archpedi.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid= 486162

Analyze
Organize the results from the survey into a chart or graph.

NOTE: "At school" includes the school building, on school property, on a school bus, or going to and from school. Bullying types do not sum to total because students could have experienced more than one type of bullying. Stakeholders Unite
Administrators, faculty, and staff should all be involved in educating students about bullying. Students need to know:
the effects of bullying how to report bullying how to be more than a bystander

S. U. continued...
The Kentucky 4-H Teen Council has developed a lesson plan including an ice breaker (warm up), activity, and review session. This activity should be conducted at the beginning of the school year. 1.Ice breaker: students will introduce themselves and say 3 things about them. 2.Video resource: students will watch Jareds Story (www.jaredstory.com/). Jared committed suicide as a result of bullying. 3.Activity: Bullying-What is it?. This engages students in discussing and identifying types of bullying and why people bully. 4.Review session: students will review what they learned, how to recognize bullying, and how to stop bullying

Reanalyze
Towards the end of the school year, the surveys from the beginning of the year should be redistributed. Counselors are looking to see the effects of the antibullying activity. Are the results lower, the same, or higher?

If the targeted results were not met, what could be done differently next school year?
Counselors will meet with administrators, faculty and staff to determine what changes need to be made.

Educate
The results of the anti-bullying lesson should be published for other stakeholders to have an understanding about the contribution of the program.

Summary
All school personnel should be involved in bullying prevention. Bullying surveys should be conducted at the beginning and end of the school year. Students should know the different types of bullying and how to report it.
