Mathematics Lesson Plan LESSON DESCRIPTION: Title: Two Digit by Two Digit Multiplication Grade Level: 4th Grade

Author: Danielle Kolb DOMAIN, CLUSTER, STANDARD: Domain: Number & Operations in Base Ten Cluster: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Standard: 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. OBJECTIVES: Students will multiply 2 digit whole numbers by two digit whole numbers. Students will have a better understanding of the steps needed to complete 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Students will remember previously learned information.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION: Students will work with peers and the teacher solving multiplication problems. MATERIALS AND TOOLS: 1. 1 inch graph paper 2. Pencils 3. Overhead Projector/Elmo/Whiteboard ANTICIPATORY SET: Today we are going to work together to solve multiplication problems. TEACHING PROCEDURES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES: 1. Decide which method the students would like to use to solve problems. Traditional or Bow Tie.

2. Do one problem on the overhead and have the students tell you what the steps are to the method. Be very clear in your directions and demonstration. Do a second problem if needed. 3. Write down the first problem to solve. Ask a student for the first step, another for the second step, and so on until the problem is solved. Check for questions about the method. 4. If anyone disagrees with an answer or step ask them to explain their method of solving the problem. 5. Continue with additional problems making sure to include input from all students. 6. What are students reactions? Are they confused, catching on, or doing well? ADAPTATIONS AND ACCOMMODATIONS: 1. Students will be working with the teacher at a set pace. If students want to work ahead they can, if not the student can work with the teacher. 2. Students will be able to ask peers at their table for help if they do not know what the next step is. GUIDED PRACTICE: Included in the teaching procedures CLOSURE: 1. What, if anything, were we able to clear up today? 2. Do you find one method easier? Why or Why not? 3. Do you still have questions about the process? What would help make it easier? INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Have students solve one problem on their own. When students are done have them put down their pencils. Walk the room to check answers. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION: Students will work with peers and the teacher solving multiplication problems. STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE: Make sense of Problems and persevere in solving them: decide which algorithm to use to solve the problem then apply that algorithm to solve the problem. Look for and make use of structure: Knowing that either the traditional method or the bow tie method will work to solve the problem. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning: Using the same algorithm to solve the problem knowing it will work every time if done right.
