!reut"er ,as born in -ersailles, and ,as initially taught by his father, ,ho ,as a musician in the royal chapel, ,ith later lessons from .nton /tamit". 0e became one of the foremost violin virtuosi of his day, appearing as a soloist until $)$1. 0e ,as a violin professor at the Paris 2onservatoire from its foundation in $'34 until $)5%. 0e ,as co6 author of the 2onservatoire7s violin method ,ith Pierre ode and Pierre 8aillot, and the three are considered the founding trinity of the French school of violin playing. For a time, !reut"er ,as leader of the Paris 9pera, and from $)$' he conducted there too. 0e is probably best kno,n as the dedicatee of 8eethoven7s -iolin /onata &o. 3 in . ma:or, 9p. ;' #$)1*+, though he never played the ,ork, declaring it unplayable and incomprehensible. !reut"er made the ac<uaintance of 8eethoven in $'3), ,hen at -ienna in the service of the French ambassador, Jean68aptiste 8ernadotte #later !ing of /,eden and &or,ay+. 8eethoven originally dedicated the sonata to =eorge 8ridgeto,er, the violinist at its first performance, but after a <uarrel he revised the dedication in favour of !reut"er. !reut"er ,as ,ell kno,n for his style of bo,ing, his splendid tone, and the clearness of his e>ecution.?$@ 0is compositions include nineteen violin concertos and forty operas. 0is best kno,n ,orks, ho,ever, are the 42 tudes ou caprices #$'3%+, ,hich are fundamental pedagogic studies.
