It is only in the weak gravity limit that GR indeed predicts GWs. In the strong limit, those equations cannot be solved, and many believe that extreme non-linear nature of GR may suppress GWs. 2. Einstein himself strongly opposed the existence of GWs (like he opposed black holes). However Einstein might be wrong vis-a-vis GWs. 3. Many believe that though spacetime wrinkles (GWs) may indeed propagate, they may not CARRY ANY ENERGY. There are lot of theoretical research by Fred Cooperstock to this effect. 4. Despite tall promises while seeking money no project has been able to detect any GW in 30 years (latest is LIGO), and Australian Govt stopped all funding accordingly. 5. However there is good circumstantial evidence for GWs from the orbital decay of binary millisecond pulsar PSR 1913+16 (Hulse Taylor Pulsar). And this led to a Nobel Prize. 6. The recent publicity that BICEP2 has detected GWs is both incorrect and somewhat ridiculous because BICEP 2 can directly detect only photon polarization. But that is modern theoretical physics, by hook or crook they want to establish theories by fooling politicians and public.
