Lesson Title: _Stories in Code Using Letter Notation___

Objectives

Student will evaluate his or her own emotions elicited by a piece of music and allow it to inspire the creation of a story with a similar emotional tone. Student will apply the musical concept of letter notation to their writing of a fictional story. Student will create a storyline from their imagination with a specific emotional tone and using a code format. Student will evaluate the work of another student by decoding their story using the written music for the song, Its Raining. Student will prepare a short presentation describing their fictional story. Materials & Resources

Anticipatory Set

The students will listen to music chosen by the teacher that represents an emotion. The teacher will ask the students what emotions are felt while listening to the songs. The song, Its Raining will be played and students will volunteer emotions that are felt while listening to this song. A list of emotions will be written on

the board.

Objective

Students will use the emotions elicited by a piece of music to inspire the creation of a story. Students will use letter notation to create a code for reading a fictional story. The teacher will give the students resources to use during the activity, including a musical note chart and the Its Raining music worksheet. The class will work together to write the letter notation of the first half of line one of Its Raining. Students will write the letter notation down on their own worksheets. The students will be called on randomly to identify the representative letter of a specific note in the song. All of line one will be completed in this manner. The class will have ten minutes to work independently on writing the letter notation for the remaining notes of the song. The teacher will then use the first three notes of the song to write the beginning of his or her story, with blank spaces for letters to be filled in when the decoding process begins. The teacher will remind students that their story must have a beginning, middle and an end. The teacher will read his or her entire story to the class, showing them the example on the projector screen or smart board. Students will choose an emotion they want to incorporate into their story and begin writing a story and creating a code. Students will independently write their ficitional story, being sure to use the sequence of letters found in the letter notation of Its Raining when leaving blank spaces. These blank spaces must be in the order seen in the song. The story must have a relationship to the emotion the student chose after listening to Its Raining. Students will trade their story with a friend, read the notes of the provided music with help from the note chart, and decode their classmates story. The filled-in story will then be read out loud to the class by its author.

Differentiation: Visual-Spatial- The student will use a chart of notes and compare it to a piece of music. Both images will need to be used to complete the activity. Musical- Students will be required to experience music using their emotions, and will gain experience reading simple notes from written music. Interpersonal- Students will conclude the activity by trading work with a friend and decoding their story. Intrapersonal- Students will have time to write independently. Verbal-Linguistic- Students will choose what to write their story about, being sure to include interesting details related to emotions felt from a piece of music. Students will read their story aloud to the class.

Directions: Become a master of your own secret code as you write a story that only you and a friend can understand! Write a list of letters used to represent the notes from the Its Raining written music in the order used in the song. Use the accompanying note chart to help make this list. This list of letters will guide you as you write your story in code!
