12 de marzo de 2014, 10:25Hanoi, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Experts revealed today the existence of a former military
base with high dioxin contamination, a substance better known as Agent Orange, used by the U.S. Air Force during the
war, and which is still causing damage to the country.
Members of the Committee to Mitigate the Consequences of Dioxin released the information as part of a workshop on
the issue that was also attended by a delegation from the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP), the Than
Nienh newspaper reported.
The level of contamination in Bien Hoa base and in nearby lakes is higher than that at the airports of Da Nang and Phu
Car, where the aggressor army kept its main warehouses storing Agent Orange to be spread throughout jungle zones
inhabited by the rural population.
The findings were part of a UNPD-funded project, dubbed "Environmental Remediation of Dioxin Contaminated
Hotspots in Viet Nam".
The National Committee for Dioxin Mitigation advised local authorities about prohibiting the access of locals to the base
and refraining from using water from the contaminated lakes.
From 1961 to 1971, the U.S. Army sprayed 80 million liters of Agent Orange, containing 366 kilograms of dioxin over
76,800 square kilometers of land here.
