In Unit 8 students will review the concept of renaming fractions as equivalent fractions. They will be introduced to algorithms for multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, and they will practice estimating and calculating a percent. The main topics of Unit 8 are: equivalent fractions, multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, and percents. Check out the parent information for more ways to support your child. Students choose an activity that they are either interested or is at their level to work on during math time. This week students will prepare a debate relating to a math algorithm and debate with classmates about which algorithm is more efficient.

WEEKLY vocabulary
!Math Unit 8: area model, discount, majority, quick common denominator, unit fraction, unit percent, and mixed number (Everyday Math Vocabulary List) !Spelling: No spelling words this week due to the short school week. Instead spend your time working on your invention.

Unit 4 is complete and this week we will review the skills, strategies, grammar, and vocabulary skills introduced and reviewed this Unit. Students will work in groups to complete review games and then will play each others games to review for the test. Students will take the test online. In writing I will introduce the format for the Invention Convention display board. Students will begin their drafts with information about their invention process.

Language arts:

On Monday we will swing by the Upper School Science Fair in the gym. Students can see what they will be expected to do next year. Our Science this week will be integrated into Writing in order to prepare for the Invention Convention.

Science:

Joao and Teodora love the time to work on their passions during Genius Hour.

DK and Nick answer questions during the Mystery Skype with a class in Venezuela.

!The assembly for Monday, March 17th is cancelled. As soon as I know the rescheduled date I will let you know. !Our last Mystery Skype was with a school in Venezuela. We now have Skyped with classes on three different continents. Who will we skype with next? !Please feel free to comment on the website posts.
